Quahoging with the boys

Woke the nephews at 5am and they were reluctant to wake up this early. Once we told them the game plan they started to perk up... My brother and I used to do this every summer when we were kids and need to pass along the tradition. We loaded up the kayaks and headed to the beach. I had the kids carry the kayaks with their dad so I could take some pics, soon after we were able to push them through the mud and into the water.
Once we reached the flat, it was like old times. Walking through the mud feeling for quahogs with our feet. The kids were a quick a study. We had our limit and a couple of razor clam cuts on our feet and started to head back to the beach.



Great morning, they were asking when the next trip was!

What a nice thing to do for your nephews, memories for a lifetime. Now I feel better about ringing your phone at 5 am thinking you were with Andy and Moose in another location not as active as mine.

Great stuff mike, my dad passed the same tradition down to me years ago and I've showed it to my girlfriend.

Keep it up mike those are the memories that stand out.

When I was 8 or so, I started to get invited to go down the bay with my Portguese uncles and older cousins to dig. We would target softshell(steamers) and quohogs to cherry stone and slightly larger. We alway got bushell baskets full with maybe 3 men and 5 to six young people working. Had to watch for sunburn of the plumbers crack if you were heavy. Until i was about 12 I was skinny as a rail.The men wouldhave some hot sauce and pretty much all necks were eaten on the spot.
Nobody digging anymore but we do often "remember the old days" while eating purchased ones now.

I kept a bull rake and 60 to 80 feet of stale on my boat for about 20 years. Digging with a bull rake on a sailboat is back breaking work. After a few years I just went back to buying them from the diggers out of Warwick and Apponog and sometimes further down. I also got lobsters direct from the boats down in Newport.

Born in the early fifties, It was a good time to be on the bay

Awesome story Mike, traditional things now a days have been shadowed by video games, tv and lazy parents, its nice to see they were receptive keep up the good work.
