The question is, will the judges convict, or shrug and say "It's only 6 fish and you were going to eat them, right? You can go."

This seems designed to deter amateurs. A professional will love that his costs are already spelled out by this law and with a first offense he needn't even pay for legal expenses.

Why no stipulation about loss of license. Why wait to confiscate equipment until the second offense? Don't you lose your rod in freshwater if caught poaching the first time? Why no MANDATORY loss of boat for the second offense? Doesn't this leave leeway for a judge to go easy?

The DNR busts their butts to get these convictions. $100/fish and back to work seems very lenient to me.

Numbskull, what we need is a unversal poaching bill that not only penilizes the poachers, but the buyers as well. A bill that is not clear, as to what the penility will be is a useless process that will never be enforced.

What good is a fine on those whom defy the odds and may get caught once, pay a fine and still continue to poach. They call that the price of doing business in the illegal trade of poaching striped bass. The same holds true to those who purchase these illegal fish.

The system of poaching is so entrenched in our culture today that most find it normal rather then an aberation. Stop those from buying the illegal caught fish and you will be better off in the end. Enforcing the laws at the fish market and penalizing the fish market and other outlet stores would go a whole lot further in reducing the poaching process for the overall benifit of saving the striped bass resource for the future, for every one.Both commercial and recreational user groups.

By the way how is the injury going?? I expect by my next visit you should be ready to dance?

I would rather see the penaltys be on the order of:
1 fish $50
2 fish $150
3 fish $450
4 fish $1350
etc.
This would penalize the inadvertent criminal and the one with a plan

i'm in Singing Reels camp........

because if we can do investigations
for poaching in the USA for bear gallbladders
Venison, elk, or moose meat... and Abaloney

we can also find out where BUYERS are getting
their fish.... as shark fin soup soon becomes illegal
in California....it's time to step up to the plate.

the one WORD that infuriates me is delicacy
because that is used as some sort of "good reason"
to harvest something ......even if its illegal.

What about shore poachers?

First offense should be loss of five gallon buckets.
