I pulled one sweet that weigh 2 1/2 pounds, Friggin thing was enormous. Many more that weighed over a pound. Good first year growing them.
Only dug up a few yukons. They were hardball to softball size. Looking forward to cleaning out the patch.
That compost I broke into this year has to be the reason why.

If your plot has had good drainage, I'd wait until the foliage begins to die before harvesting. Remember that as the plants begin to "fade", they send all their energy and nutrients to the spuds. If you can afford to wait, you patience will be rewarded.
Oh, and don't forget to let them dry out before you store them. The skin needs to dry for optimal tater shelf-life!
As for sweet taters, I couldn't say since I've never grown them before.

Thanks Tim, we are leaving the yukons in the ground. They have no vines at all on them but the ones I can see that grew on the surface look great. The smalls ones are destined for the first beef stew of the season.
The sweets have been cooked, the ones that were big enough. She put 19 quart size containers in the freezer of the sweets. The smaller ones will be used for stews as well.

Bake the small sweet taters. They get all caramely and tast like candy. I bake , butter outside of skin and eat skin on and all.

Oh , BTW , I used to pull my regular potatoes when the leaves started to turn yellow. I had red , idaho, yukon gold and pontiacs. All grew well as did the sweet potatoes but the sweets did not get all that big. .

No I did not un -earth them as of yet
A local farmer said wait until after a strong frost and they die back a bit.
The worst thing is all this RAIN he said , but they can keep going for weeks .
May dig a small patch next week before I head for the Vineyard for 10 day s
