I speak out against Gibbs Lure Company
Lately I've noticed they've been cheapining things up
THe hooks gromets swivels are of very poor quality
They've stopped adding sparkles to some batches of lures the wood is bggining to slack off. I am angry becasue they Gibbs name used to be a sign of quality sure tackle deallers had trouble obtaining them but they produce fish or they produced fish at this rate the plugs will fall apart before they hit the water. Please join me in petioning them for quality.
I refuse to buy their products anymore. Beachmaster and Habs cover most of my wood needs, homemades fill in the rest. Their quality control has gone down the tubes, they've changed some designs for the the worse and they are not as durable as they used to be.
Seriously, though, if I do buy a Gibbs lure (from time to time I will pick one up if it fits a particular need)...first thing I do is chuck those crappy hooks and replace them with VMC's.
Ran out of your old stock, eh ? Well, there are certain ones that I do buy - primarily the stubby needlefish. I haven't bought a danny or pencil popper or darter in a while. I probably will pick up a casting swimmer or two but that's about it.
I will buy regular production like SuperStrikes, semi-customs like Beachmasters & The Mad Polrussian, and I have a schwingin' assortment of custom stuff from a lot of the guys this year that I'm DYING to try out. That will be my likely Pluggage for this year...
As for Gibbs - I'm not sure they take much of a hit as others continue to buy them. Also with more people having hooks in the water than ever before, people are going to probably replace the people that resource and go elsewhere.
In all fairness, the hook problem is Mustad's, not Gibbs. Atom and Superstrike use the same 3x strong Mustad open eyed hooks, and they fail with the same (almost uniform ) regularity right out of the package. Grab the eye with pliers and with only light pressure, they'll either break or bend open effortlessly.
VMC or Eagle Claw 4x, closed eye and used with HD rings, are the only way to go. VMC's are better IMO due to their shorter profile---even with the addition of a split ring, the overall hook profile is the same or even shorter than an open eyed Mustad in sizes up to 4/0.
I use those HD rings that The Surfcaster and SOL sell.
I've had Atoms going back 15 years that periodically had the bad hooks. They used to just change the hook for you , no questions or arguments , they knew there was a proplem with different batches. They would snap like they were made of glass.
we've been saying this about gibbs for several years now. they won't change, they push out so much volume and still sell them. they have models that no one else makes, at least currently. the only way you'd see a change is if you buy different plugs at your local shops and the shops don't order from gibbs as much. they read these boards, but choose not to post because they know how many will hammer them.
