The Mausoleum Plug
The Mausoleum Plug
Here is an interesting story for plug collectors. Last week a benefit fund raiser was held for a local surfcaster, Gary Mathias, who was tragically killed in a surfcasting accident last Fall. The benefit was a scholarship fund raiser for his surviving daughter. Local fishing clubs along with a motorcycle club organized the event and solicited donations for the raffle/auction to help with fund raising. One of my friends is an avid plug collector who decided to donate one of his rare prized Donny Musso wood metal lips circa 1970s. He figured it would sell at auction for a pretty penny.
Once at the benefit he donated the plug and it was placed on the raffle table along with many other items including, rods & reels, jewelry, liquor baskets, gift certificates, and such. As the raffle began it became clear that there would not be an auction – every item was to be raffled. The master of ceremonies who ran and announced the raffle mentioned briefly that someone had donated a very rare “Mausoleum Plug”, but neglected to identify it among the 100s of items on the tables. We became worried that someone who had no idea what the plug was worth would end up winning it. I kidded Mike that it would end up in someone’s bluefish bucket, a two dollar item at a yard sale, or worse yet, displayed at something similar to a “Sons of Anarchy” Motorcycle Club. Towards the end of the raffle it was still one of the last few remaining items. No one picked it because it wasn’t in a package – lots of plugs in fancy packaging worth just a fraction of the Musso went first – including a local builders jointed swimmer which I had won on table three. The Musso was on table four. Then it happened – someone won the plug with maybe three items remaining. He was showing it to his girlfriend/wife wondering what they would do with it. I moseyed on over and tapped his shoulder and asked if he’d like to trade plugs – mine after all was packaged. His girl said, “Sure, thank you for sharing the wealth,” and gladly exchanged plugs. The look of relief on Mike’s face was priceless as I handed him the Musso and said “This plug will now always be known as the Mausoleum Plug, don’t ever get rid of it.”
Mike brought the Mausoleum Plug to Rivers End this past Saturday, Donny Musso signed it.
