Thumbs up Stripers in Narragansett Bay

Hey Group. The Striper fishing inside the bay has been FANTASTIC. I have been fishing the north/east side of Prudence Island a few days now and have well over 100 Keepers too the boat to 36". The baits of choice have been the 5" stormeye shad and RI poppers white with orange head. They are incredible. On the way back to the Dock Wed. I stopped in my boat about 100 feet off shore where some guys were fishing and they said they didn't catch anything and have been there a couple hours. I threw a popper about 15 feet to the side of one of the guys and BANG fish on. did that 3 times in a row. (sometimes life isn't fair). I told them where they can buy some of the same poppers: Benny's. fishing is hot in the bay.

I'll be heading out there Monday. Are you fishing near the shore on Prudence or off near the channel?

The Digger is correct. Look for the birds working the bait and try to get a drift through. Slow retrieve with irratic stops has been the trick. Well as far as a class on using the popper:

They are wood so they float. Try to stop it for a second or two and then give it a couple good pops. rod tip to your side. then let it sit or slow retrieve a couple cranks than pop again. that's how I was hitting them. If you don't see the birds working try working the north tip of the island and work your way east to potters cove. The bass will hold tight to shore some times.

Thanks for trying the popper. please let me know how you do.

Question Shore fishing in newport

Sounds like you are having some great luck out there. My Dad wants to hook a striper and I know a couple of good spots but am not that smart about it. Purely fishing from shore these days. I was thinking the War College at the Naval Base or out past Brenton Point. Are these generally good and is shrimp the way to go?

My mistake, I meant squid not shrimp.

Sigs - welcome to S-B ... "Shrimp" - You a left coaster? Big shrimp is popular out west for stripers...

Yes, squid will work as will herring. One thing to keep in mind when chunking those schweet waters down that way is that all those rocks that attract all the bass have big magnets underneath to snag your terminal tackle . Be prepared to loose some gear .

Plugs and eels worked like a plug (real soon) are great along those shores too

Wednesday the 14th was my first time out this year.
Live Herring got us 4 30-32 inchers off of warwick light around 4:00 pm. Had to go in, but others were doing much better off Conimicut light

No Fabrications in the bay: Just Stripers For the new young fellow - Welcom and Good luck working the Newport area. I know the park on Ocean Drive is holding some nice stripers and squid will work just fine.

Thanks for the advice/help. Called my Dad and he will be here next week to hook some. He said that they are starting to get some stripers in the river around Troy, NY also. He would rather get some out of the bay, though. He is retired and fishes (with my Mom) every day. Can't wait to see his face when he finally lands a big one. Thanks
