Montauk

I am doing a late Fall run to Montauk. Probably stay a week in Nov. Recommendations for motels/accommodations.

No boat, back in the suds.

Royal Atlantic is nice. Fishing can be dicey by that time of the year though. It can be phenomenal if the herring are in, but the weather can kill you.

I have stayed at the Snug Harbor Motel. They have kitchenetts and apartments and the off season rates are very good. Nothing fancy but clean and the mattress is not too soft.

They give you a parking pass that lets you park at Ditch plains lot and other- East Hampton Town parking.

Not right on the beach. Family run operation.

Crows nest, the albatross, memory motel, gurneys, ricks crabby cabins.

Look at kayak com always killer deals there especially end of the season.

Trying to get out for the fall.

My good friends own two killer restaurants out there.

Good luck out there.

I feel montauk is the most over rated place to fish ever, has beautiful scenery, but the oddest group of locals ever.

Lived out there for a while running a restaurant and unloading fishing boats.

Most the guys from montauk sit down to pee, but that's another story.

I always did well there Thanksgiving weekend.

We always stayed in an RV so I am no help with accomodations but the Shagwong Tavern is a great place to have a meal and a drink. I useed to love sitting at the bar and watching the locals. Good food too.

They got the biggest Blue Marlin head sticking out of the wall. Its worth the trip just to see that huge locally caught marlin.

I've stayed at the Royal Atlantic before in November, typical beach front resort hotel, but sure beat staying in the van which we did another year and the nighttime temp was 20. Froze my butt off.
I've gone third Saturday weekend in November, which is the second weekend of deer season here in VT and caught fish, no size, long drive for me.

This is 100% accurate.

And if its completely going off, you think the canal is bad? Bring the bear spray and a 12ga. I've witnessed two "confrontations" and heard some major threats between the "locals" out there. (Note: most of them aren't local, infact not even 1/4 are from the east end.)

Most are from Nassau county and NJ and they come with an attitude. Easy access was the downfall of Montauk. The worst thing they ever did to LI is build the expressway out to Riverhead. When you had to take Montauk highway the entire way there were far fewer people who made the trip.
Had a boat there for a long time.
The Nov bass bite is a thing of the past. These fish today have different genetics I think and start leaving in August. In the 80's you could catch them well into Dec. I don't see anything like that anymore.

I would make a mid-late Sept trip and try to fish mid week. Forget-about Fri/Sat/Sun trips.

While they do get big fish there, most of the blitzing you hear about are tiny fish that crash the beach feeding on bay anchovies. The mosquito fleet (little CC's with fly rods) chase them around but I would not waste my time. That said, the blitzing action is impressive and every now and again, big fish push thru and you can connect if you can avoid the mobs. I stopped surf fishing that place when stuff was stolen from the truck. Also, don't leave your plug bag on the rocks while you fish, it will not be there when you get back. I grew up on eastern LI as a kid...I loved the place but it is not the same out there anymore, it is way more congested.

I too have witnessed hostile fishermen get in each others face to the point of knives and police involvement. (over a fishing spot) I would not wast my time.

Montauk is a much better boat fishing spot than beach fishing spot IMO.

FWIW...when I am not on the boat...I sit down to pee now too. I don't know why but it is just more comfortable

Turtle Cove during a daylight blitz of 32" fish makes the Canal on a breaking tide look like a remote stretch of the Yukon.

Then, you also have to deal with fly guides who put their boats on the inside of the schools of fish, blocking you from casting to them.

The migration has changed, too. No big showing of sea herring in the late fall. The fish stay out in the rips.

Wise men speak because they have something to say; Fools, because they have to say something.

Someone came out with a book that lists all those backroads (yes, it includes Noyack Road) so they're just as bad now.

Most times if you are willing to walk a little bit, you can avoid this.

Lots of room to fish in Montauk if you avoid the "famous" spots.

Plenty of places to stay in November. Montauk Yacht club is nice Albatross is cheap. Fishing in November can be nonexistant to insane if the herring show up which has not happened in quite a few years. I'll bite my fingers and ignore the BS comments from the internet fisherman with little actual experience fishing Montauk. Just look at the number of #50's coming from Montauk. A better plan would be to keep an open plan and go if the fish show.

I have never fished M.. and have no desire too.. but something you said is worth repeating... as we were dragging plugs through the rips in the mouth of the river last night, i was telling Night shift that in the early and mid 80's we used to get bass.. BIG BASS.. on Plum Island ( Ma.) until thanksgiving.. there were lulls between schools.. but every few nights you'd hit them.. when you got into the blind bass.. you hung it up for the season..... that hasn't happend since the moritorium...and you are right.. our fish DEFINATLY turn around in August....

A good run is better than a bad stand!

I would tend to agree I havent been in a couple of years but my most successful outing down there was a night the rest of my group decided it was a day fishing location and I wound up hiking the south side by my lonesome. I went past all of the famous spots and had the place to myself. And caught fish

Stick on rigged eels about 16 inches long rigged with 2 big (8/0) Siwash chemically sharp hooks. Avoid the crowds. Fish from 100 yards north and west of the light to Shagwong point around night time high tides (before and after). If you can't get bass there in November that way then sell your stuff and take up bowling.

Yes the fish can be seen all day out in the boat areas but at night them fish can be at and patrolling the beach in about a 20 seconds swim from where you see the daytime schools with boats on them.

Have you read "Montauk Confidential" by Melnyk?

The last chapter "Montauk's Fishing Holes" is worth a read.

Good luck!
