Looking for when you coinsider optimum times to plant certain vegetables.....Peas are going in Next Weekend per Raven's Suggestion....

Interested in when to plant me Spinach and Lettuce...

any Suggestions? Maybe some tips for how to plant/fertilize for success....

4/15 is usually when the peas hit the dirt. Cover everything over every night thereafter. I have actually heated my pumpkin plants, which I haven't started yet. Buy some Coast of Maine compost if you don't have any ready to mix in with the loam. I have been adding those bails of woods chip/sawdust that you get from Agway every year to create more ariation (sic) IN EVERY RAISE BED. jUST ASK MY BUDDY DOWN the street about when it will be dry enough to be able to back up to the cow manure pile, two weeks.

do not use any "horse" manure because you will
overwhelm your garden spot with undigested weed
seeds and eventually loose the battle.

now with lettuce ....you'll need to have several
spots because you don't want it all becoming ready at once

i use a vitamin B-1 solution like super thrive
(makes roots grow 100 times faster)
and
some maxi-crop for the seaweed's minerals
this gives them extra vigor and resistance to bugs

it's not like you can preserve it
...so think succession planting

the critical thing is spacing so that you create
a micro climate where the outside leaves just touch
shading out the spaces for weeds to grow.

Lettuce loves to be transplanted
but when 4 inches tall
do both: direct seeding and a flat
to fill in empty spots

I have a friend with horses. We've been using the horse manure for years in my wife's garden. She loves using the stuff. She has always had a very successful garden.

i have used it in the past and its a crap shoot
depending on where it comes from
it was reportedly 8 years old but sometimes it's been disturbed
or it's in proximity to a field where wind has blown many seeds into it.

this year i have switched to a different type

typically when you fertilize your fertilizer only reaches about 10%
of the plants roots but when you foliar feed by spraying the leaves with a water soluble fertilizer you get 90% utilization.

if you know of a large willow tree you can cut a bunch (50) of 24 inch long branch ends and place them in a bucket of water for a week.
this liquid can be reused as a type of fertilizer because the cuttings release a root stimulant that will increase root growth 100%.

usually just slows em down a bit... as soil's a good insulator

i am building a hot bed because it's at my highest elevation
for early planting ...and then down back where the snow is
the "last to melt" or the coolest spot that is designated for
last planting of the "cold lovers" in may and or June.

I plant every month regardless. Succession ! is the way!

I put up my Pea Trellises and planted the peas this past weekend.....Gotta go by today and see if the wind took them out from last night.

I made mine with a center pole ringed by Stakes in the ground with Sisal Twine running from Stakes in the ground to the top center of the pole pole....like Teepees

I may shore them up with some rocks on the center pole for some added support.

I got the concept off the internet.....of course

1 Pole, 6 Stakes w/ Twine and 6 Seeds per Stake for a total of 36 per Trellis.....did 6 Trellises....hoping to stock the Freezer w/ some

4 feet wide by 30 feet long (give or take) for 120 square feet of salad growing ect. And no friggan wood chuck
is going to escape detection not to mention deer that are plentiful out back as well. I can't believe that it's taking
almost four yards of loam/compost mix to fill the thing.

I have a $hit load of pelletized carrot seed which makes for PERFECT spacing because carrot seec
is real fine like grass seed.

ahhh! finished and ready to plant after a brief snow storm in the A.M.
i like having some green stuff with my Fillet's ya know and not at store prices!
In reality we really only needed a 4x8 but being Scottish i always Over compensate.

Broccoli plants are sprouting despite the 30 degree mornings
we've had since 3/31 when planted......they love COLD....

I'm still waiting for my Peas to make an appearance......

i pre soaked mine as always but the variety was smaller (smaller pea seeds)
and they're a non climbing bush variety that's extra early. I only pre-soaked them for around 5 hours
and they had swelled enough that i figured the germination process had begun but normally
i get everything ready and pre-soak overnight a full 8 hours.

I am still waiting too for the (main) peas to pop... i have some in an experimental bed
that was planted during that first hot week that sprouted but not that many.

just hasn't been wet enough ...but its coming

bought tomatoes and peppers (plants)
and some Rosemary herb
to keep the white cabbage butterflies away

I finally got some peas popping through....

,,,,,so your best bet is to plant in mini v trenches
that way a hard rain won't wash them around as much

Will be planting potatoes in the morning. Peas and lettuce maybe as well, which is the wife's venue.

I have nine pumpkin seeds growing in pots. Seeds come from huge pumpkins. Smallest seed comes from a 985 # Berard, and the biggest from a 1600 + # Jutras. Going to give it hell this year.

Squaring away by adding height to a couple of raised beds. Brought in 18 wheel barrow loads of loam from the pile today. Mixing in Haywood Moo Poop as I go. New compost isn't ready yet.

Actually because of this heavey rain coming and which has arrived Iheld off on planting. Didn't want anything to rot. Probably thursday.

Have to get my pumpkin holes ready for the 1st at the latest.

Rav,if you don't already do it, a ring of cottonseed meal
around the lettuce as it begins to head up will give you
the best ever.
