Interesting news re:commercial fishing in MA

I was told last night by the owner of a fish market that for the first time ever, commercial fishing for BLUEFISH will be closed next week in MA waters. It seems commercial gill netters have been making 5000 lb. hauls (his quote) and the reported catches are waaaaaay over what is considered "maximum sustainable yield" (I just love that one....). So perhaps for those who have wondered why they can't seem to find the bluefish as in years past this may be at least one of the reasons?

I'm friends with one of the commercial gillnetters on FB and he's constantly saying fishing is tough.

It has nothing to do with MSY, according to the NMFS notice the MA quota has almost been filled.

Uhmmm ... Paul ... much to my mother's chagrin - we had bluefish at least once a week, maybe more during the summers of the late 70s and early 80s as there were so many blues around in LIS ... of course I took the dark meat out immediately - but also I had several area restaurants and fish houses that would buy as much as I could catch.
