Isn't that what's called the "pitch pole"?

No boat, back in the suds.

At first glance I thought it was a windsurfer. That would definitely ruin your morning

That's when you burry you bow into a wave and your stern rises up and flips you over.

I have many many times sailing. A strong moon tide dumping out of the bay with a stiff southwest wind will give you a standing sea off castle hill that will give you the perfect opertunity.. We used to do it on purpose.

that's just someone trying to jump the wave and flipping the boat.. not smart...the boat is too far airborn IMHO for a classic pitchpole..not fun .. either way.

A good run is better than a bad stand!

I own a flying Dutchman. That would be a hard one to pitch pole. ( too long)

Oh those were so much fun (the fiberglass ones, not the narcotic ones)

I don't think there is a max length to pitchpole but it would be harder. I was more thinking what was the largest you would go and still want to deturtle afterward

Love the FD!

Well... Any boat with a weighted keel shoukd de-turtle itself, but chances are that your rig won't de turtle along with the boat.

Lasers are the must fun to pitch pole. Especially when it's blowing gusts to 25 and there is 300 people on the lawn of castle hill that are about to call the coast guard, then you wave to them and do it again.

I raced International 110's out of Scituate in my youth, knocked down a number of times, but thankfully never came close to end over end. Great boat after a hurricane and a good stiff breeze, it's a 24 foot surfboard, hold on and hope you can control it enough to not be bailing for 4 hours.

Note to self: Do not keep the cooler holding the "chum" in the front of the boat!!!

Some of my most vivid memories to this day are out on the trapeze, sailing solo on a moonlight summer night between Scituate Harbor and the north river or Minot light depending on the wind direction. I actually bought a 2nd one and restored it after college and sold it after my first was born, no time to get out much after that.

Cool! I sailed so much when I was younger. Lasers were my boat of choice. Got 8th in the Smythe Cup Nationals in 1992

Too bad I don't really have any good photos, back on the 70's and early 80's I think I was shooting with a 110 instamatic ironic isn't it. Here is a photo I can certainly relate to, loved being out on the trapeze on my own and feeling the rush as your speed just double on catching a big roller.

Why I got a kick out of the picture was two buddies of mine stood their 17 footer on its tail there. All the rods, coolers, buckets etc, went over the side. By Gods grace they landed the right way. Too scared to go back in they drove to p-town, gassed up, drove to rock harbor and hitched a ride to the goose for the trailer. Long expensive day it was.

came real close to doing that in my tin boat in Barnstable many years ago. Going too fast into an strong outgoing tide with a real strong wind in my face. Hit the wave, wind hit bottom of boat, and next thing I'm looking at the floorboard. I was trying to get back into harbor as I should not have been out in the main channel with that wind. . Scared the living crap out of me. You only need to do that once to make you a much smarter boater.

That pic is a spitting image of the knuckle heads who flipped their boat going out of the chucktown b-way last fall.

Pitch pole occurs when a following sea or wave overtakes your boat and forces that boat bow first into the bottom of the wave. Almost happened to myself, a whitman firefighter, and the boats owner Dave Joubert fishing Porky's off of the south side of the Vineyard. Bow came out of the water just in the nick of time and we road the wave like the 23 foot Wellcraft was a Gordan & Smith long board for about a 1/4 of a mile before we could ride up over the top to safety. Scared the B-jesus out of us. The boat captain had just said watch out for any waves coming up behind us too.
