I enjoyed myself today. Al gave great 2 part seminar. I kinda enjoyed the 45 min debate on tide vocabulary.

Niko - So glad you posted that picture of Domenic, I thought he stole the show. Great Picture!

TDF - I missed this thread earlier otherwise I would have introduced myself, great chowder. Thanks for volunteering back there.

Appears there was a little debate on the definition of "slack tide". I did a little research on-line when I got home and I think I will go with Crazy Alberto on this (I think this topic could become quite a thread).

Alberto did a great job, especially for doing two sessions on short notice. His anecdotal stories were not only amusing but filled with information. His presentation skills were very engaging, I could have stayed another 6 hours.

BTW - Hit the Agawam Diner on the way up and the hash and eggs were awesome. They don't make diners like that anymore. What a classic, glad to see it hadn't changed at all.

I saw and spoke with ten S-B members, yet still missed Spin, lamigsb, and jredfly.....

I was able to spend a couple hours with Al after the event and finally got him to understand why the audience was confused... as the majority of them fish the mouth of the Merrimack, Annisquam, or jetties and outflows. I hope he will do an article on the subject, as it did not click with me.....

We went to Surfland afterwards and were treated to a history of reels.... Martha has a collection that was simply amazing, and we didn't see an eighth of it. Many NIB, some still sealed in factory bags.... While I do not have the wealth of knowledge about them, I could at least appreciate the history I was holding! Al was blown away, I think, as he had fished many of them. I had never seen a thumb brake.... She had an original box of the leather brakes! As Zeno said to me, someone should have had a video........ Kay also showed us her collection of PI photos over the years, going back to 1850s. The girls were great and I truly appreciated it.

Lastly, I was impressed with the Release reel. Made in USA! Hope to see the lefties at RISSA!

Yeah. I go with al's explanation also. Makes quick sense to those who understand the tides and currents at the canal

Should be a thread of its own, and would love to have Al's POV to set it up.... But;

Assume the tide chart states that high tide is at 0100. When is slack? When is maximum water flow? What time do you want to target being there?
What I got from the presentation was that max current occurs at 0100.... Al would be targeting 0400 to fish, though if may have been low tide at 0100. I can't remember. Just don't want to post misinformation. But I am sure he stated that max current is at the time the tide chart states it is High or low tide.

Gotcha. makes sense if you fish the canal (like someone said up there), slack is approx 2 hours before hi/low, and hi/low time represents when the tide moves at full force

something clever and related to fishing

The Eldridge explains this effectively. If you fish the canal you understand that tide and current are two different animals.

Show was enjoyable but Alberto was confusing with his "slack tide" explanation. What he said might be true in the Canal or up inside a breachway, or some other specific spot, but doesn't make sense to me otherwise.
Homemade hash at the Agawam, Jredfy's good company, meeting Ninko and Dom, seeing Stripermaniac and Lee, Tim and Mark and Kevin, all made for a great day and a temporary cure for my cabin fever.

I enjoyed the presentation despite having to leave after the first half. missed the slack tide debate and I think I am glad about that!

What folks seem to be missing about "slack" tide and currents is the fact that they are often affected by weather conditions, particularly wind. When I fish my mini-canal here in Glosta, if the tide is supposed to turn around at say, 6AM, but if the wind is howling up the canal it will add another 1/2 to 1 hour before the water slacks and then turns. This can be quite benificial to the fishing because the slack water can last longer and the bite can stay hot. Just my 2 cents....
