Tarpon should just be getting underway I found out. Looks like snook, redfish, sea trout will be the target. Seems like you don't need to hire a boat to get into good fishing though...

Those barrier islands are sick. I just got comfortable right as I left a couple weeks ago. Was fishing Boca for a couple days. Very similar techniques to up here in the surf. Best days were a hard West to NW wind (onshore) so bring stuff that casts into the wind and bites (hence my SP minnow suggestion). Also the water is gin clear... Pack flouro

I highly recommend Chris Rush of rushcharters.com. I have used him in May for tarpon but he is outstanding with reds and snook too.

I recommend Captain Mike Rehr, his website is http://captflyrod.com/, he is on Sanibel and I have been fishing him since 1990 - he is awesome, and will catch fish when no one else does. He is primarily a fly fisherman, but also realizes that it's better to catch fish than stick only with the fly - he does what is necessary (but you also want to discuss that with him) ... one day we switched from fly rod to spin outfit back and forth catching one tarpon after another ... I was never without a fish from before the sun was up to late in the afternoon ... we have had epic, epic days of tarpon fishing ... amazing days of red fishing and beyond. He has a huge depth of knowledge and experience. If Mike is not available he can put you in touch with other guides that are worth the effort. His wife is phenomenal too ... one of the best.

Just got back from Sanibel last Wednesday. Went out last Monday with Eric Napier--my brother-in-law arranged the 1/2 day charter ($350). Eric was great--we didn't do anything fancy and caught a boat load of fish. He had a bobber and live shrimp with minimal weight. Caught mainly small stuff-- Lady fish, Small Jack, Some nice sea trout, and I caught a salt-water catfish which he handled carefully as I guess they can sting you pretty good. I inquired about Tarpon, he said that they come right into the waters we were fishing and it gets hot starting in the next couple weeks. We left from the launch that Fly Rod just mentioned which is right before the bridge to Sanibel. Eric was a good guy, low key and seemed to know his stuff. I'd recommend him.
