Estimating weight

Can anyone out there tell me about how many inches a: 10 lb,
a 15 lb, a 20 lb, ... by 5's up 50 lb, striper would measure? I have asked for a digital scale for my birthday, but its three weeks off and I've been catching fish now Ball park estimates are fine, just for my personal guesstimates as I always release my fish.

A lot depends on girth, especially when you get over 25#.

A 42" fish can weigh anywhere from low 20s to close to 30 depending on girth.

General rule of thumb:

10 lbs about 29-30"

15# about 34-35"

20# about 38-40"

25# about 42-44"

30# about 43-46"

35# about 45-48"

40# about 46-50"

45# about 47-52"

50# about 48-53".

54" or greater you could probably assume you have your 50# unless it's a real racer.

Girth is the real key---the record fish was 78-1/2 lbs but only 53=1/2" on length.

Length x Girth X Girth divided by 800.....This is an old weigh masters trick to keep the sellers honest.. Guys would stuff fish with sand to try and get over on the weigh master..This was giving to me by Rick Newcomb at Fore River bait and tackle and he swears its very accurate..

Yup, around 35". The formula works almost to the exact pound. At least on fish that have standard fish proportions. Don't know whether it would work on, say, conger eels.

Also, that record was weighed in about 6-8 hours after it was caught, so it may have shed a pound or two. Using 35" as the girth I get almost 82# which is probably what she went right after she was landed.

I just don't like carrying a calculator in my jacket pocket
