Woodcraft stores
Was wondering if anyone gets their wood blanks from this place. I have a store in Woburn near me that I was looking at online and saw they carry wood blanks. As I'm new to this, was wondering if anyone buys from them and if it's good quality. They have all different kinds of blanks online. Anyone? I'm sure this has been covered in a previous thread, and I'm sure not many are thinking plug building right now, as it's fishing time, but since I got that new lathe, I wanna give it a go soon. Thanks in advance.

most of the wood blanks that WC sells are hardwoods and exotic woods (purple heart, cocobola, etc) for turning bowls, pepper grinders, and pens. I do not believe they sell any alaskan yellow cedar, or red cedar. They may have some maple or birch which is good for darters and needles.

Start with pine and poplar. Cheap and easy to get. Curbside shopping acceptable. Some old furniture is sugar pine! Table legs, chairs, ballusters etc are good sources... That's how I get most of my maple.... We'll get you set up and turning, then we'll worry about spending money on the "right" wood....

Yeah, I've always had this problem where I start something and instantly my mind starts going to the extremes of the activity. I'm a perfect fit for fishing and all it's related entrapments!!

They have nice wood and in the store you can pick the exact piece yourself (vs mail order where they pick). They are expensive though unless that particular species and size piece are on sale. Every month they have a sales flyer that has some wood deals. Some are good , some great , some just a buck off. So you have to shop. Personally I would not look at them as a source for plug wood due to the cost.

Good source for hardwoods etc. You will need deep pockets if you intend to buy lots. I use them for birch dowels if I want to turn a few needles, but they do not have AYC or Poplar in the price range you will want to be in.

springfield has great choices of hardwoods, if the lumber you looking for is for plug turning a lumber yard. if pool some $$ worth the trip to Liberty,great stuff.

They have rough cut AYC and WRC in 2X4 and wider. That way you get actual 2"X2" blanks not 1 1/2".  |
