GPS
I just received a Garmin 162 e for fathers day.
Great inexpensive unit, under 500.oo w/Bluechart cd. The map covers south. Maine to Long Island. Just black & white but I couldn't afford to go color. The soft ware is great to work with.

I've got a magellan 315, it's 3years old and works great and easy to use. does eat up the batteries pretty quick though.

I would go with the Garmin 176 color or black+white GPS/plotter very portable I use it in the boat/car/fourwheeler/and on foot while hunting. Great detail and the ocean charts are perfect.
