My dad has been driving one for the last 5-7 years or so. They work great on the beach.

Thanks guys, I know it's reliable, except for the 07 engine, and the size I'm looking for, but wanted to get your opinion on road ride and mileage or any other opinions you might have about the truck'

2011 Xterra pro 4x - purchased last November @ 20 K miles, currently at 38 k miles. No issues to report - got the extended warranty to 120k to be safe - as i pack on miles to work.
So far not bad - my prior ride was a Yukon.
Gas mileage 15/20 highway - ride good, a bit "squirrely" on the highway in the snow i found, but gets me the 50 miles highway drive to my job the past 10 months.
Had in the sand 2 weeks ago on MV. Got around OK but it's not the same beast as the Yukon was.

JPI,
Send Dad Bomba a PM. He can fill you in. He's an engineer that likes details, so I'm sure he can answer most anything you can think to ask.

Mikey, that is very kind of you but I just came back from buying an F150.
I got 17 years out of my 96 F150 and feel comfortable with Ford knowing I got 120,000 on it with little trouble except a steering box and a front end work at 95,000.
I like the looks of the xterra, a real sport truck but no bed to take stuff to the dump with.
Thanks again, All you guys are the best.

Yup, I would have stayed with the full-sized model, myself. Mikey's 4 Runner is pretty sweet, though.

I drive a 2002: had it since new. Rides on sand better than my 90s 4runner (it's a bit wider). I've towed a 20' cc as far as NC, no problems. The small turning radius makes maneuvering a trailer easy. It's been very reliable over its 110K miles.

Roger

05 Xterra SE with 100k miles..bought from new. Only issues have been with drive shaft covered under warranty. No other issues. Been rock solid (knock on wood).
Fantastic in the sand and snow. I upgraded to Goodyear silent armor tires.

Great Vehicle, but...
Here's the deal with these: Auto tranny models only.
The 2005-2009 (2010?) models have an issue where the radiator will leak usually around 85K-95k. The leak allows radiator fluid into the tranny and will totally fry it costing you somewhere around $5000. There have been some legal issues about this, but there has never been a formal recall. Nissan has extended the warranty on these Gen 2 Xterra's to 80K, but as I mentioned it usually happens after 80K. Do a google for 'xterra radiator transmission problem' and you'll see.
Thankfully, there is an easy fix: Reroute the hoses to bypass the tranny cooler. Some guys put an aftermarket heater, but this is not mandatory. See here: http://www.thenewx.org/forum/showthread.php?t=25955
The other main issue with the Gen 2 X's is that the rollers around the timing chain will wear prematurely causing a 'whine' and eventual major issues when the guides/rollers fail. Be aware of this before you buy. I believe there is also a 80K mile warranty on this issue as well.
I've got an '06 SE which is the spitting image of Typhoon's above (Night Armor I believe), except mine doesn't have the Duxbury beach sticker.
That's all I got, back to the fall run. It's on you know...
