His resume' reads......"Pretty Good Player"! End of story! Player who gets a contract like that needs to bring with him some accomplishments......Championships are won by teams...not individuals! Beyond his stolen bases he brings nothing but a huge medical file! 1 decent season in 2011??? Thats whats known as a high water mark kids! He ain't getting younger and he ain't getting better......and he sure ain't getting healthier! No batting titles, no rbi crowns, no MVP awards, no homerun crowns, 1 gold glove, 3 stolen base titles. Really??? 22 mil a season??? Guy is an overpaid bum! Yankees made a mistake that will haunt them sooner than later!

So much for Hank wanting to get below the Luxury Tax threshold this season.
They'll probably get a couple of good seasons out of this....I doubt 7. The yankees STILL haven't learned their lesson about long term contracts.
Can't wait for A-Rod to win his case

Without Ellsbury we do not have a chance at the playoffs last year. Good Luck to the guy, I am glad he got his payday. He has some serious tools as a leadoff and fielder.

Yankees would have been smarter if they had improve their pitching before signing this size contract

another player that helps make Scott Borris a rich man....it will be interesting to see if he can stay healthy..best of luck to him .. he was a valuble asset to the sox... but I'm glad they didn't cave on the long term contract...

they paid Ells 7 years at $153m with an optional 8th year for another $15m.
I wonder how that will sit with Cano who got a 7 year $160m offer from the yanks....A guy who pretty much carried that team all year this season.

that's great for him to get a huge payday, i don't blame him at all
if the Yankees are that desperate to make such a huge expense, that is their fault. 153 million is a ridiculous amount of money
I guess they need to get younger and faster and Ellsbury is their opportunity

Ellsbury is 30 years old with an injury history. Guys rarely get more healthy as they get into their mid-thirties. I'd be surprised if he plays in 80% of the games over the length of that contract. I still don't want to see him running wild stealing bases against the Sox, though. Any team other than an AL East team would have been fine for him to go to.

Players move around all the time now. Good news is the Yankees blew 153M which means that much less to buy other guys (like pitchers) who would hurt us more. Time will tell but I think net its good for the Sox.

You can't blame a guy with his injury record for locking up a guaranteed $153 million over 7 years. How'd the Sox reward Arroyo for taking a home town discount? They traded him.
I am kind of surprised at the Yankees doing it, though. Traditionally, that's a Mets' move--long term big money contract to a guy that either gets hurt or won't play hurt. See Mo Vaughn and Beltran.

The guy has certainly gotten some attention for what some here term as a player who had one decent season. I don't think a statement like this is one which is well informed. Why the sour grapes for a guy who helped us win 2 titles..?

I don't consider myself a blind homer
if you do Larry, that's your opinion
it's their money they are tossing around, let them be stupid with it if they want, more luxury tax to go around. I think the yankees are idiots for overpaying. If you were in his shoes Bigfish, you'd have taken it too

no trade contract too so they won't be able to dump him with cash when he does start to get old. That is a bad move in my opinion. The guy is an awesome lead off player and center fielder in my eyes. Would have loved to keep him but too many years. Good for him. It's a business. Would have been nicer if he went elsewhere but will just make for extra rivalry action.

It's all about his current value IMO. He's a great player who helped us win two titles but his current compensation package makes him a potentially huge liability given his health record. If he stays healthy for 2-3 seasons and the yanks win another title its a different story.
