DEM to have Public Hearing on closing 3 Rhody runs - THURSDAY NIGHT!

I just got this off the SNESA list: Anyway, apparently we (collectively) beahtched so much about the lack of herring, real in some places and percieved in others, that DEM is proposing closing 2 Warwick runs and one in Barrington. Hearing is tomorrow

Quote:
Anyone who fishes with herring in the spring, and anyone who cares about the herring runs, should attend the DEM PUBLIC HEARING that is scheduled for TOMORROW NIGHT

Thursday, July 10
7:00 p.m.
DEM Headquarters
The Foundry Building
235 Promenade St (3rd floor cafeteria)
Providence

DEM is proposing to close three popular herring runs:
Prince Pond in Barrington and the outlet stream to the Barrington River; Warwick Pond in Warwick and the outlet stream (Buckeye Brook) to the West Shore Road Bridge; and Gorton Pond in Warwick and the outlet stream (Hardig Brook) to the Route 1 Bridge (Post Road).

We complained that DEM wasn't giving saltwater anglers a chance to be heard, so Jan Reitsma, the director, scheduled this special public workshop.

NOW WE NEED YOU TO SHOW UP!

Listen to their presentation. Perhaps the herring are in trouble.... Perhaps not. Educate yourself.

It would be great if a lot of anglers showed up. This would let DEM know that we complain for legitimate reasons, and they'll continue to pay attention to our gripes in the future.

If you think, "I get my herring from Gilbert Stuart, so this doesn't affect me," THINK AGAIN! If three other herring runs are closed, it means all of those people will move to the other runs, increasing fishing pressure there. Soon we may be in the same predicament as Connecticut - with ALL herring runs closed!

So who's going - if this gets closed I don't want to here people whining about it for lack of trying...

I originally started this thread with "I just got this off the SNESA list - 24 FRIEKIN' HOURS notice - how about that?" but turns outr there was notice 2 weeks ago
