Surf Rod

I currently have a 8' foot rod and I am looking into getting about a 10' to increase my casting distance. I want a rod that is light to medium action. I only what to spend around 100 bucks. I would appreciate any suggestions of what to buy and where to go?

There are daiwas and Ticas in that price range. Check out the online stores of some of our sponsors.

For around a $100, you could either get a decent used rod (lami, allstar, st.croix, etc) online or get a new tica, daiwa, tsunami, ocean master, ugly, and a whole bunch of others these days. I don't know if I'd spend the money to get 10' more on my casts though, you're talking just over 3 yds?

Go to RedTop's or Eastman's. Or simply, you can go to sports authority. they have some good stuffs there.

Save yourself some time, a headache, and probably some money too. Take the trip out to M&D's in Wareham and see Mike. He'll take good care of you. Mike stocks most everything you could want for a rod.

Yep - 'nuff said... And tell him you're a member here at S-B. Don't go to Sport's Authority. 97% of their rods suck and the 3% are hard to find even if you know what to look for. I can't speak for Eastman's and it's been a couple years since checking rods at Red Top but they didn't have anything decent then for the money you seek...

You may want to compare some with the more inexpensive custom sticks. Not sure what price range they start at but it might be worth the step up. What are you looking to do with the rod - plug?

Also, just get a 9 footer.

Thanks for the replies guys. How far is Wareham from Cranston?
John I am looking to plug with 1-1/2" poppers, throw some eels, but I also like to throw lighter tackle like cocahoes and storms.
So I was looking for a rod that can handle all of this. Am I going about it the right way looking for light to medium action. Do you think it is worth it to go from 8' to a 9'?

Putting a lot of eggs on one rod. A rod comparable to a 1087 Batson could do that - no monster eels but decent eels would work. If you already have the 8 footer that could step in with the cocahoes when needed...

Custom Batson 1088 - $150 and it'll cover everything you want to do except it will be a little stiff for the low end, but no rod can throw both eels and little stuff perfectly. Nevertheless, It's worth the extra fifty bones to get a rod you'll truly be happy with long term.

I my sound like a broken record, but......I was in for a new rod this spring. Originally, I wanted something to replace my chunking stick.

I went and visited Mike. I went in with the intention of buying the Sealine 10'.....he put that and two other rods in my hands....the 10' Tica fast action, and a 11' Tsunami......I hemmed and hawed over all three for awhile, and walked out with the Tica for $64 with tax, after the SB discount.

Glad I did.....as I said, I bought it with the intention of it being a chunking stick.....which I've used it for with great results, with as much as 6 oz of lead and two chunks on a hi-lo rig.....but I also find that more and more, I use it for plugging and jiggin, too......thrown everything from 4" Storm shads, to 5 oz jigs and rubber, to needlefish, swimmers, and poppers, all with good success. It is rated for 2-8 oz.....

Have yet to throw eels with it, but I have no doubt it would suit that purpose just fine as well. And it's lighter than the Daiwa, and has cork grips as opposed to the foam.

M&D's shouldn't be more than 1/2 an hour or so down 195 from Providence/Cranston

Yes, go to M&D's. The Lami Triflex rods are great for the money and Mike has them at great prices. The Daiwa Sealines are good too. The Tica's seemed too stiff for me.

I have an eight foot daiwa that I use for just about anything.....and i can cast just as far with that as i can with some of my longer rods....very decent rod for the $$$. I havent tried the tica but I was checking them out one day and liked the feel....prices seemed reasonable too...

I got a pair of tsunami rods at Fore River Bait and Tackle - thank you Rick. And have been very happy with its performance. And it was in the ball park of $100 for the pair.

Hey Iwannakeeper, we're in the same boat. My best last year was a 22"er. 2"" shy of legal. so far this year I got up to 27" just 3 days after CT went from 24" - 28" to be legal. I'll release any fish I get though, unless it is big enough to get me a spot in "The Fisherman's" Dream Boat Contest drawing.

rocket - I would like one for the Grill as well. I am not primarily a meat fisherman, and won't keep every keeper, but would like to bring a couple home.

Good luck to you and me.
