"Update 8:56 AM EDT -- NASA advises that a small meteor could have impacted the ocean in that area, from the Lyrid Meteor Shower, which peaked last night. Normally, the small meteors from this annual event never make it to the surface of the earth; they usually burn up in our atmosphere before reaching the ground. HOWEVER, it is possible that a small meteor, perhaps the size of a softball, made it to the ocean and, upon impact at 14,000 MPH, would cause quite a localized wave. There is no way to verify this possibility.
Developing . . ."
I saw this yesterday

So far there's no sign of a tidal wave bearing down on New Bedford harbor--in fact, the hurricane barrier is still open.

Yes, a 180' tidal wave that far out theoretically could be much bigger inshore and we would have noticed it come ashore

One in a billion odds but while uncommon, these incidents do happen. And contrary to what a lot of people would have you believe, our friendly neighborhood Reset Button Russians Submarine Forces have been getting active lately to levels not seen since the fall of the USSR.

Technical glitch on the buoy... Yeah, we'd see that one coming.

Any coincidence with the parade we've been running in the Baltic lately?

Yes. Russia has been putting more boats to see than in years and have put a few off our shores, those that can make the trip. They don't have the numbers they once had but they don't seem to be putting their people through the optical-rectumitis that our people are going through.
As for "the parade", we have been putting solitary ships up there and in the Black Sea, nothing really provoking, A DDG would not last long in either place. Air: less than a full squadron of aircraft. Land: a couple brigades here and there in Europe. What we have in Europe, total, is a sliver of what we did in the 80s. We even pulled out the last tanks a couple years ago, just before this stuff ramped up, and now USA is moving some small units (tank/mechanized) over to the Baltic states which amount to no more than a trip wire.
Espionage, disinformation, and cyber war from Russia, at the US and NATO allies, particularly the Germans, Poles, and Baltic/Nordic states, is at the highest level since the 80s - and in the case of cyber, far higher.
See all this stuff from "RT" lately? That is the official new service of the Kremlin.
If Russia decides to go for broke, the two Cavalry Squadrons will have as much life as the Berlin Brigade did 30 years ago. Short. The Europeans are shadows of their former selves and what they do have has poor availability due to lack of maintenance and forced short days (yes, German maintainers are being forced to work short days in order NOT to break labor laws). Sixty percent of the tiny Luftwaffe is grounded. Not to mention they have tiny, tiny ordinance stocks and have been "borrowing" ours in Libya and Syria.
Of course, the Peace Dividend and all, everyone knew Russia would not invade Georgia, Ukraine, stir the Azerbaijan and Armenia pot, or send their terrorist puppets into Turkey to blow stuff up. Seeing that Russia never did any of those things (/sarc) surely they wouldn't do anything now.
Add a disastrous US Foreign Policy, difficult USA politics/elections, hollowed out forces, and a President that is mailing it in for the next 9 months. Sprinkle a divided Europe with a migrant crisis, terrorism, and minuscule defense spending and add a dash of poor Russian economy, sanctions, nationalism, and a declining population with a narcissistic leader with a Czar complex...
At least it is good to know that the European Theater ground conditions get real good for maneuvers real soon, too.
Deterrent works. We have little deterrent these days.

Boy did you just hit a lot on nails right on the head with a sledge hammer John. we keep giving away what is needed to stay safe so only the greedy will have . Fast n mobile is ok but low numbers in bullets n bombs makes for a real short fight. Once we're out of bullets its over. Putins not stupid. Just arragant.

It is a cesspool of a perfect storm out there right now. Easily the worst it has been in 40 years. If RU/CN/IR deiced to kick off and change the world dynamic, this is when they would do it. Not a tinfoil hat kind of guy but people have been actively jockeying for these positions for a decade and here we now are.

Well, several of them have suspect welds in their reactor system and are stuck to the pier. The ones that are coming online are not replacing the boats being decommed on a 1 to 1 basis - though they have as many or missions to day than 2 decades ago. China is building sub and surface ships at a far higher rate than we are and our small ships coming off the line (LCS) suck badly.
And in a few years the bill cones due for the Boomers

My wife approves.. It is indeed Gojira!!
She's from Sapporo far to the north of Tokyo, and as a kid, her and her friends thought Gojira was real.
