Would this work?
When I fish eels, it is almost always from a boat. But with Cuttyhunk trip approaching I was giving thought to trying something new for the lower (or upper) half of the tide. The rocks and weed present some challenge for that last 10-15 yards of retrieve. So what if I used a casting egg, with a 4' leader to a live eel? My hope is to have the eel out beyond the junk, fishing longer, and that the egg will help bring the eel up through those last 10 yards more easily....

I don't know how that would cast. Eggs work great getting lite stuff out but i think you will helicopter with an eel. I would think the last 10-15 yards of the retrieve could be productive and lifting your tip should get you in fine.

This.... there is a rock pile I fish ( by boat) that requires making a pass through rock weed infested rocks to get back to the boat... works good....until you hook a fish... some how they always end up IN THE WEEDS.
so how are you going to land the fish through the weeds

I would use 20 lb mono because it floats vs. braid that sinks. That should do it.

I think the eel and egg would helicopter when you cast and you would end up with a mess. Eels come up to the surface very fast on a quick retrieve. I would say just pick up the retrieve speed when you get in close. Using a long rod would help too. Wish I were going this year.

High tip, fast wind to get over the bubble weed. Or go to Churches and the other places without the bubble weed

I would not recommend the casting egg... there is just no need... besides, the eel will just ball up on the hook.
i fish eels in the weediest of boulder fields, and its a non-issue. Just speed up your retrieve towards the end. as previously stated, dead eels are also a great option (just zip-tie it to the shank of the hook)

Skin the eel, put it on a needlefish so you feel good about things, then use a darter.
