Fishing Block from a boat
So.... I've been out a few times and never really done that great. Problem for me is Block is roughly a 2 hr hump (42 miles) from my marina that I only make under good conditions. I usually get to the ledge at ~2-3 AM.
That being said, the only area I know (barely) is the SW ledge, and when that is a bust I really got nuttin in my bag of tricks. An example is the past Saturday when all I could muster was BSB on eels once the sun broke. Not what I invested the time or money for. (Friday was apparently EXCELLENT). I saw not one SB caught.
I'm not looking for any specifics, but if anyone out of the kindness of there cold dark heart (or a sense of pitty ) wouldn't mind sharing some GENERAL knowledge I'd be appreciative (which i understand is worth less that a cup of coffee). I am a firm believer in earning what you know, but it's hard when you can only make it to an area 1- 2 times a year.
PM's open, discussion, smoke signals... whatever.

ive only fished it a handful of times and that was a few years back. the difference for me was always the drift. kind of like tog except drifting. 50' off the spot and you were screwed. find the sweet spot and you were catching cowzillas

Makes sense. Would you generally mark fish, then set up? Or just try moving around the humps? Or the usual... it depends . Also I was Kinda surprised not one boat was inside the 3 mile line (ok maybe 1-2 at times)

Joe, in my limited experience, two trips with Cohen Babcock, a great majority of the boats catching were outside the lines.... Almost like the fish knew where the line is and dared you to fish it. His screen was almost black, like an airport runway, where he did the same drift over and over. One night, when the tide was going slack and the bite was slowing, he flicked his underwater blue lights on and off a few times.... You could see the boats quickly scatter! He is fun to fish with!
Like all of our fishing areas, it must change year to year, so it wouldn't be a bad idea to see if you can hook up a night with him... if you can get him off the tuna bite that is. I have always had memorable times fishing with Cohen and usually very good fishing!

when i was going down there epo enforcement was ramping up. there was always a fleet "offshore". i fished a productive spot inside the line but it wasnt a particularly big area. and i was always fishing at night. and a long leader off a 3 way swivel made a difference

I’ve been 1 time with ray the fish finder was lit up but we only managed 2 fish. Nothing huge . And another time my self during the day. Same result…. Never had that lights out Trip. Like you it’s hard to dial anything in only fishing there occasionally. With no local intel

This was eight years ago this past Sunday... I hope Cohen's photography skills have improved. That tail was well behind my back.
Also note all the green running lights in the background.

In the fog , new to the radar, should have kept it off, my head was spinning trying to use the screen and senses together… love to go again minus the fog…..

BTW, OTW TV had a couple awesome episodes about fishing aroung BI the last weekends. More about how vs where. Biggest bass caught on the show to date. Very cool. FWIW.

Not a boat guy myself but the few times I was wrangled to fish in one at Block we fished the double hump which was very popular at the time. Look for the 50-60 foot hump at the top of this chart.
