romans were gay !

Tiberius:
Tiberius, who spends most of the later years of his reign as emperor – from AD 26 to 37 – on the island of Capri, is said to have a special penchant for his spintriae (groups of young boys), with whom he surrounds himself and indulges in all manner of promiscuous behaviour. The walls of his bedrooms at Capri are reported to be decorated with various sexual acts and positions 'in case a performer should need an illustration of what [is] required'. Suetonius even accuses him of putting 'unweaned babies ... to his organ as though to the breast', but many of these reports may be put down to propaganda by his numerous opponents.

Nero:
Nero's reported sexual activities range from being seduced by his mother Agrippina to forcing his unwanted attentions on married women and boys. Famously, he takes two homosexual lovers, Pythagoras and Sporus, in 'marriage'. Nero is said to behave as the wife to Pythagoras and husband to Sporus, whom he has had castrated. Taken together with his 'artistic' performances (see The arts), when he will often take on a female part and dress accordingly, Nero's behaviour scandalises Rome and plays an important part in his downfall.

Elagabalus:
There seems to be barely a Roman emperor whose reign is not coloured in some way by his sexual appetites – which are often prodigious in the extreme. Commodus, for example, emperor from AD 180 to 192, is said to have a harem of 300 girls and the same number of boys and to put on great orgies. But for sheer shock value, none can compare with the Syrian, Elagabalus, emperor from 218 to 222, who believes himself to be a living god.

Elagabalus is remarkable not only for being only 14 years old when he becomes absolute ruler of the Roman empire but also for his sexual activities while holding that office. In less than four years, he goes through three wives, including a Vestal Virgin – a heinous crime against Roman law, which states that any Vestal breaking her vows of chastity should be buried alive.

But even more shocking in the eyes of respectable Roman society is his 'marriage' to a slave named Hierocles. Elagabalus likes nothing better than to dress as a woman and go around with his 'husband', who is even encouraged to beat the emperor as if he is his real wife. Sometimes Elagabalus plays out scenes in which Hierocles finds him with another man and punishes him for his 'infidelity'.

'For he wished to have the reputation of committing adultery, so that in this respect, too, he might imitate the most lewd women; and he would often allow himself to be caught in the very act, in consequence of which he used to be violently upbraided by his "husband" and beaten, so that he had black eyes.'
Cassius Dio

Elagabalus is also known to frequent the brothels of Rome, where he delights in performing the duties of the prostitutes. A confirmed transvestite, he is said to 'send out agents to search for those who [have] particularly large organs and bring them to the palace in order that he might enjoy their vigour'. He is also reported to have 'asked the physicians to contrive a woman's vagina in his body by means of an incision, promising them large sums for doing so'. It is hardly surprising that the Praetorian Guard finally runs out of patience and kills him.

with strange bathing habits " The wife of Emperor Nero had 500 asses to supply the milk for her baths" I dont even have one ass that gives milk !

One of the Bible verses most frequently cited by conservative, anti-gay Christians occurs in the Letter to the Romans, generally attributed — except for its final verses — to the Apostle Paul, Romans 1:26-27:

(26) “For this reason, God gave them up to dishonorable passions. Their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural,” (27) “and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in their own persons the due penalty for their error.” (Revised Standard Version)

Goose I agree. It's OK for the liberals to censor what many of us believe in while we have to "be tolerant" of things we find totally offensive

Now I'm really getting tweaked here. This is an general conversation forum here on these FISHING boards. As I said in the last thread similar to this, topics SO controversial and polarizing like this on a FISHING website shouldn't be taken TOO seriously nor should they get too serious. This thread, forget about the topic, displayed a general lack of class by many here - regardless of one's position on this topic. And maybe it should be taken somewhere else that has an interest in deciding such an outcome. This is square hole board for round peg topics on a fishing board. This is where stuff that isn't too serious and that has little or nothing to do with fishing can be discussed. This forum and our FISHING boards as a hole are not intended to carry the weight of the future of mankind. Go try a serious site for something like that. Discussion IS and SHOULD be healthy and tolerated here but if it is too serious - remember we're just a fishing site.

We are again starting to drift away from how we were. Same thing happened last year in the final throws of cabin fever. I hate to see it happening again but I guess it is.

Mr Sandman - personally I'd hate to see you leave. It's been a pleasure communicating online for the 2-3 + years you've been hanging out. I don't entirely understand if it's this thread or a culmination of events - I hope not - or you need to take a day off an unwind.

Beach - you got a lot of stones in inviting someone to leave if they don't like it, especially someone that comes from this site when it was a lot smaller. Invite someone to disagree but don't invite them to leave - not your call. Not anyone's unless someone voilates the terms of the board or trashes it.

Again as for this topic, if someone wants to open it to DISCUSS it, that's fine with me. This psuedo-joking "fag ragging" has no place on this site and is really far off of our reason for being here.

Please keep it clean folks and at least semi-personable. Topics that are truly polarizing, such as religion, gay marriage, can go too far beyond the scope of this site.

God says that it is a sin for man to be with man or woman to be with woman. We are His children and He loves us all.
As a follower of His Son, Our Savior, Jesus Christ who teaches us to love each other then here is the way it was explained to me by a back woods Preacher way up in the woods of Vermont.

"We should follow the teachings of Christ and tell these persons,"
"I love you as a human being but I detest your sin."

So far as the marrage stuff I stand on what the Bible teaches, Man with Woman O. K.
Any other way, Not O. K.

Remember this...There is a major difference between Loving one another as God and Jesus Loves us and the street definition of what is not Love but Sex!

That having been said, Come on Spring, Let us go forth and Fish!

Eben, I think they can do whatever they want but it may be morally wrong. I think some want a legal marraige only so they too can get benefits much like a husband and wife can recieve health ins. benifits, that may raise costs of insurance, who knows who it could effect. that's one small miniscule example.

I know plenty of gay people too, they don't bother me and I don't bother them. But I wouldn't want to have to explain to my 8 year old why so and so has 2 moms. Families used to be the backbone and the glue that held this country together, I don't know what's happening. I am far from religious but I do believe in God, and I think the churches have enough troubles with priests loving their alterboys the wrong way
Maybe Priests should be the ones allowed to be married instead of gays.

They're not gay, just very happy

The United States Constitution does not exist to grant you rights; those rights are inherent within you. Rather it exists to frame a limited government so that those natural rights can be exercised freely.

1984 was a warning, not a guidebook!

It's time more people spoke up with the truth. Every time we let a leftist lie go uncorrected, the commies get stronger.

This topic makes me want to

I am disapointed to see this kind of topic here on sb.com. IMO Take it elsewhere guys. I bet few people come here to debate these kinds of issues. There are plenty of sites out there that cater to this kind of topic.

I guess when you get up to 2000 members we have to expect this. I like it better during our smaller days when this place did not need a scupper section.

My father has a part-time job as the church grounds-keeper, I just got back from removing signs that were taped all along the street poles surrounding the church, and only the church.

Gay Marriage = Love
Churches view = Ignorance

The church teaches to hate
Gay marriages will teach how to love

...I laughed about it, but he was pissed. I am 300% against it, but like Goose said....and the way I look at it, they're planning their own destiny. - ....just my opinion, to all you ummm....extra happy people out there.

....although that last flyer still has me laughing, you'd think they'd word it differently.

<<<T.lapinski>>>...one further point i would like to make. if being gay is so bad, and God is so good, then how do you explain preist child diddlers? if in the eyes of God homosexuality is sinning, why would He allow for that to go on? yet another reason why i gave up on religion a long time ago!

Tlapinski....no one can answer for God, we only have our faith to guide us in the right direction......with that, I'll drop my dime on this subject..IMO = (what my faith has me to believe), (about the bold part)...God gave us the power to choose, the brains to know whats right and what's wrong...the decision is ultimately OURS. Do not blame God for man's fault's. God doesn't make a priest molest a child, this priest is human...just like you and me. He has the power to make the wrong decision, just like you and me. Priests are not saints, they're merely men with the same choices as the rest of us... I have never been afraid to speak about religion, reading thru this post...I can see fear disguised in ridicule. People need physical proof now-adays, Faith is just a word people use to name their daughters. I thank God that my parents planted a "Faith" seed in my heart years ago.

Weewee.....crabs are not GAY!!!

Ok, so what's wrong with being gay?? IMO... men were made for women, and women for men. What do you get when you combine a man and a woman?....a child, life, the next generation, mankind, our future....I could go on and on.

...now if being gay was the right way, what do you get when you combine a man with a man??... ... If looking back in time, everyone had been gay....then we would be using our bodies as machines to create people...I don't know how it doesn't make sense to you. If my father had been gay, where would I be? where would you be? tlapinski..when you decide to have that "one on one" talk with your son about the birds and the bees....what will you tell him? It's ok to touch other boys???

Hound... first off, I'm FAR from a preacher....and even less of a saint. I do believe in the Almighty, but I don't however, follow his path 100%. I'm also human and unfortunately put myself before him, many times... I find that many people, men and women alike...do not like to discuss religion. I often wonder why.....is it lack of facts? ... is it lack of belief?...is it fear of saying the wrong thing? is it because they feel they don't know enough about it??...I really don't think there's a wrong or right answer. I'll talk about anything...and if I'm clue-less, I just listen and form opinion.

My poor example: Do you like the color blue?....there's no right answer to that question, only opinion. Just like religion, it can't be proven..so it's a matter of opinion/faith/belief. I don't want to turn this thread into a religious one, like I said...I'm not a preacher, I'm no better than you...like your no better than me.....and if you choose not to believe, I don't hold that against anyone either. I don't think your an evil person if you don't believe in God, just a person with no hope ....look at it like this, if there's no God....you live your life and die, that's it...."shows over"

the flip-side; .. . you live your life and leave your earthly body to be joined with people from your past that you shared joyous and loving moments with in a beautiful place that you cannot even begin to imagine....I don't know about you, but I like the flip-side. Something to look forward to (hope. If your a decent human being, why not believe.......just in case

"Let he without sin...cast the first stone..."

We are ALL sinners....in our own little secretive way, we commit sin. Is there a difference between a little sin and a big sin? How would this topic compare to ..say, lie-ing to your wife about how much you gambled on the SuperBowl? In God's eyes, would there be a difference?....Why can't we discuss topics like these without people taking offense? In defense of the "Scuppers" forum, "This is a new forum for the not necessarily fishing related topics..."....Mr. Sandman, how could discussing a topic make you "move on"? If it makes you , don't open it... No harm done.

I'm not bashing any(group), I was under the impression that beachwalker, was expressing his opinion...and possibly wanted to hear ours.
