Fly Fishing Clubs

Well i can honestly say that my first experience fly fishing the salt started out as incredibly frustrating and finished just slightly frustrating. I have fresh water fly fished but was never serious about it...i know the basics. the ocean!! oh wow!! I was knotting my leaders...hooking my rod...I must have looked like a real piece of work out there...luckily I was all by myself!!! The only thing i caught all day was my hand when a gust of wind out of no where blew my forward cast right into me!!! I tried to find others fly fishing around the cape but the tackle shops I visited didn't know much about it and the cape itself is a secret spot to someone who doesn't know his way around...
anyway I was wondering if anyone knew of any clubs I could join. Really i just want to be able to watch people fish...observation is an incredibly powerful tool...for me at least. I am bound by a mon-fri job 40 hours a week but would like to get involved. thanks for the help. see ya on the water

Fly fishing clubs, it depends where you are located there is several flyfishing clubs around. United Flytyers in Burlington, and NewEngland Fly tyers meets monday nights in W. Boylston. Problem is they are out for the summer and will resume in the fall. What generally happens at these clubs is we tie flys for the following year and swap fish stories.

I too work during the week, but I fish Friday evenings. If you e-mail me maybe I could hook up with you to get you on the right foot.
I fish alone and I wouldn't mine helping someone getting started flyfishing the salt.

Email Ray who is president of the Rhody Flycasters. They meet something like every Tuesday or so for on the water meetings in season. they do a different sot every week.

If you are located anywhere near Northshore MA - the New England Saltwater Fly Rodders is just the group to offer the help ya need. They are a good group of guys willing to share info on equipment, technique, flies & fly tying, and even some favorite fishing spots!
(The fishing spots are divulged only after ya take the secret oath }>)
Unfortunately you have missed the last meeting of the spring and the annual casting clinic - both held on May 8th. The meetings will resume in Oct. !

Until then may I suggest taking Flyfisher up on his most gracious offer AND renting a few fly casting videos AND reading books on saltwater fly fishing by Lou Tabory and Ed Mitchell. (All info retained helps to greatly minimize the "FRUSTRATION FACTOR" associated with this sport).

Good luck and remember to always wear sunglasses to protect your eyes and de-barb your hooks so you can pull them out of your ears, fingers and friends easier!

Thanks a lot...I am currently in the middle of Inshore Fly Fishing by Lou Tobory and what a great read. Even though he rarely discusses specific locations I have enough experience with the salt to be able to identify at least one place for every type of situation he talks about. I appreciate the help and will definately look into those groups come fall! Thanks again.
