new record??
I was talking with someone at a local marina who said that a new record striper was caught somewhere near Sandy Hook, NJ. Said it was taken from shore and tipped the scales at 80#'s. That was the only time I heard about it. Another fish story? I figured someone where would have heard about it...

I think you are still hearing remnants of an April fools joke. The latest big fish that has been caught fairly close to New England was caught in Manhassett Bay on Long Island at almost 53 lbs.

"There is no royal road to this heavy surf-fishing. With all the appliances for comfort experience can suggest, there is a certain amount of hard work to be done and exposure to be bourne as a part of the price of success." From "Striped Bass," Scribner's Magazine, 1881.

I came across this: 78-1/2 pounds in New Jersey 1972 beating the Massachusetts record of 73 (which was tied 3 times):

I just heard on another board that someone on the north shore of L.I. caught one 68 lbs, and everyone was waiting for verification. I hope it's not a joke, but I've been known to be gullable before...... The someone else said it was upwards of 80; now that I find extremely hard to believe.
