New Block Island Ferry

This might make fishing Block a little easier

High-speed Ferry To Begin Block Island Run June 25
Service Will Offer Five Round-trips Every Day

Published on 6/3/2004

New London — Block Island Ferry Services says it is prepared to launch its new high-speed service to Block Island on Friday, June 25.

The passenger ferry will make the trip from the Cross Sound Ferry terminal in downtown New London to Old Harbor on Block Island in just under one hour, according to the company. It will make up to five round trips a day until mid-September.

The refurbished catamaran that the company purchased for the service won't be ready until the middle of July, but a chartered ferry will be used until then, according to Stanley W. Mickus, a company spokesman.

The substitute boat will probably be leased from Fox Navigation, one of two high-speed ferries built by the Mashantucket Pequots, Mickus said. The last service offered by Fox from New London was to Martha's Vineyard but it was discontinued.

The permanent Block Island boat, a 165-foot 13-year-old catamaran being rebuilt in Panama City, Fla., will accommodate up to 500 passengers and bicycles. It will be named the Jessica W, after Jessica Wronowski, co-owner of Block Island Ferry Services with her brother, Adam Wronowski.

Fares will be $25 for a same day adult round trip and $12.50 for children ages 2 to 11. Different day round trips will be $30 and $15.

Faster to drive to Galilee and take the high speed ferry from there.
