i'm all done, engine seized
seized one of the yamaha's off marblehead at 4:00 am this morning 
not a fun ride home in 20+ mph winds. at 10 knots.
gonna rip it appart this week and see what the heck happened.
still cranks over, knocks like crazy, so hopefully it's just a piston/crank related problem and not a powerhead.

That sucks Mike. I thought I had a bad night when my livewell pump died at 12am last night. Glad to hear you made it back safely at least. My son and I had a hell ride home a couple of weeks ago in 4-6 footers and only one engine. No Fun!
Call me if you need a hand or want to get out some night this week. Lee

I threw a rod six miles off Nantucket.
My solution... new 2003 225hp 'Rude!

Did the same with my 2000 225hp Rude and they replaced the power head free of charge and I traded it for a 2003 225 Rude!!!
Hooper!! hope you are putting decarb in your gas if you have the 2003DFI!!! Them motors are not ment for trolling!!! they are ment to run on the high end of your RPMs!!!
And while under warranty I would use Evinrude /Johnson products!!!! |

yeah, the timing couldn't suck more. at least we weren't at wildcat or somewhear else offshore.
i heard a clunkity clunk clunk, like it was started 1/2 way in gear and the gears were slipping, and then it went away for a couple hours. ran fine.
then when we got up on plane and were cruising along, after a minute or so it started loosing rpm's{ no noises, no nothing} then when i slowed down to idle, she stalled. tried to start again, froze up solid! starter wouldn't budge it.it was seized!
after it cooled down, an hour lor so later, i tried again, it started?????.knocked like heck, but it ran. i shut it down and limped home.
i'm thinking crank bearing since it freed up and ran again after cool down?

You won't believe this but I did the same thing in April. Fried a cylinder. exactly the same thing. Lost RPM, stopped completely then started again. although it didn't sound quite right.take out the plugs and look for one where there isn't a gap anymore. there you go. The good news is that it took the guy's at the shop a week and a half to get me back on the water. The bad news is that it's a good amount of labor and if it's not covered it might be a bear.

i'm going down tonight to pull the powerhead off and bring it back to my shop.
alot eisier to work on it with air tools.

i think i found the problem.
spark plug was smooshed gapless, overheated piston.

looks like it's gonna need a piston, rings, sleeve,head, complete gasket set.
and to fix the damn carberator that caused this

at least you know the issue and now its the road to recovery. Thank you for posting the pictures, it's nice see the inside motors that are run. I hope you're back in the water soon.

Question about the pic. Is that carbon build up I'm looking at? Do you use Ring Free or equiv? Just wondering if its a waste of time.

no i never use ring free. and i only use cheap two stroke oil also.
there's a little carbon buildup on the good pistons, but thats not what caused this. i'm still trying to get to the bottom of the issue. i think it's carb related? she was hard starting before this happened.

this is whats called aluminum transfer.
the heat melted the aluminum piston to the stainless sleeve.
gotta get some acid to remove the aluminum, then hone the sleeve a little, and hope for the best.
otherwise i'll have the sleeve bored out at a machine shop, and do oversize pistons.

FF, I had the same thing happen to my old Johnson, headgasket blew and caused plug to overheat and fall apart and mash the piston similar to the way yours looks. Good luck.

you refer to carb problem and hard start. Too lean - especially on that one cylinder - I believe a lean mix will burn hot. ???
