Sorry but I think a 7yro would have a hard time bringing in a dead 53lb fish. It's nice to give the kid the credit for it though

I'd give them the benefit of the doubt. The article said he has been fishing stripers a while and has caught many before. It was on a boat so maybe he handles the rod but got some help by backing the boat down? Maybe he's a big kid and almost 8?? Anyway , why question a fish a kid catches??

I was confused by the Providence Point refernce but we have had lots of rain so maybe the water was cooler that day?

Whatever , Congrats to the kid!! Nice fish

Im not a huge Frank Daignault fan, but after reading a few of his books, i learned that a few of his fiftie lb bass were caught in water temps over 70°

I think what the father meant by 'he did it without help' meant that the boy got the fish to the side of the boat, and then had help netting the fish over the rail....

great catch either way!

Hey, they oughta call that kid the Iron Midget - watch out Mike there goes the title -

Well, as an old friend used to tell me, it's slippery at the top.....

"There is no royal road to this heavy surf-fishing. With all the appliances for comfort experience can suggest, there is a certain amount of hard work to be done and exposure to be bourne as a part of the price of success." From "Striped Bass," Scribner's Magazine, 1881.

I don't post here much but don't really find the story unbelievable. My brother was 7-8 when he caught a 53 pounder off Watch Hill. We were livelining bunker and he did it himself. Dad did gaff the bass. From what i remember, the fight was nothing special and we were catching a lot of 25-40 pound bass which seem to fight harder.

He is now 37 and hasn't bested that fish.

Way to go for that kid. Betcha he'll be jaded now that he's caught the big one taht most of us have been fishing our lives for.

He did set the bar rather high for himself. He coud live a long fishy life and never match that fish. Imagine all the bragging rights that kid has now, lucky fella.

Everything is better on the rocks.

that's awesome... what's with all the naysayers?

My daughter is 6 and has battled fish up to 20lbs. I feel like another year of growing and she'll be able to handle anything, especially out of a boat. And she's not a big kid.

And if he got a bit of help, WHO GIVES A CRAP?

And as far as where it was caught, I'm sure all of us that have spent alot of time on the water have caught fish in places they shouldn't have been. I've caught and seen some of my biggest fish in unexpected places.

The kids a great fisherman now! All you need is a 50, right?
