Slow last night

Went out last night in the gansett area from 11-4. Only managed 2 fish, 1 was 29" other about 22". The surf and white water looked perfect bet there was a n-ne wind. Do you think because of the wind the fish were elsewhere? I was slinging eels and using needles. The 22" was my first fish on a needle, it was a green and white scud needle.

You made those needles chipwood? They dont have a nice as finish as habs or bm, but they work great. They are a lot cheaper then habs too. These bad boys cast like a missle too. I used them after i ran out of eels, caught the fish on about the 5th cast. Will let you know what else i get with it.

Bm whats a good sinking needle? Habs sink right? The scuds are for shallower water right? Any advice on needles is greatly appreciated, i just started using them for the first time last week. Lost a habs last week too a fat 20-30lb cow and another to a rock. How do i avoid hangup when i let it get down to the bottom?

Chef, I never, ever, ever had much luck with a NE/NW wind in RI -soco. Maybe I dont try as hard but a SW/SW/S wind usually produce. Escepcially if there is white caps.

Thats what i thought rijimmy, but the waves and white water looked perfect. The nw-ne wind really shuts it down in south county though, huh.

Those plugs are made by Mark. I just help him out. He's been making those plugs for 20 years. There's only a few places to get them unless you know Mark. Plugs don't need a finish to work. Those big money plugs cost so much because they're like artwork plus people will spend the $$. The Scud has caught many big fish over the years. Lot of guys only fish the Scud around here. He uses all quality hardware and cedar. Most people probably think it's a Block plug but it's made on Aquidneck.

With the winds it depends how long theyve been blowing for, how hard, and what is causing them... like a front or whatever. I guess SW would be the ideal wind, but ive done very good in NW winds. I take the wind into consideration for the big and small scheme of things. For the big picture, I look at the past couple of days and how hard its been blowing and from where. Say if you have a strong NW for 5 days straight then get a day of SW wind thats only mild.... its the right wind to fish in but what is actually happening because of this wind? Will that slight SW wind blow everything back inshore fast enough? For the small picture I look at how the wind effects the particular spot. Along with that there are a million other things to factor in. But ive done good in E, SE, SW, S, NW, NE, W... some are better than others, and sometimes im really suprised with how well i do in certain winds that arent the "preferred" winds...

I've fished it slow and low and fast on top. Depends on the conditions. That plug works in the flat calm and it's also good in big water. Once you have confidence in a plug, at least in my experience, you can use it anytime. There's always some exceptions.

I know a lot of guys who hate the NW here too. I've had awful days on the NW and I've caught nice fish with the NW. You just have to go. SW is always a good wind but I'll tell you what the wind has been SW alot this season and I have'nt done #^&#^&#^&#^&. Nights I thought I would slam 'em, I had nadda. I caught my biggest fish this year on a N/NW wind and that was in South County. A friend just got a 40#er on the North wind. My biggest fish came on a SW wind that was blowing 30. You just have to fish when you can

Thats what i do , go when ever i can. I have been fishing a couple areas hardcore, and have been trying to figure out how the conditions affect the fishing. So far ive noticed the more whitewater/waves the better, with the s-sw wind producing the best. I have caught fish at my spots though in flat water and about every wind direction.

Eben - I was out with Uncle Zeke last nite and he showed me his customized Scuds - he takes out the stainless wire drills out the tail end a little and pours in an additional lead slug - although I noticed Mark seems to have weighted them a little differently in this batch -

Zeke and DZ know needlefish, believe me.

And the Scuds? Yeah, they work

some times in the white water I will drop my rod tip and sweep the needle .
as in rip rod back and reel as I move rod foward.
go to how to and look at how to work a needle and how to work plugs ect.
I dont know what a scud is
as far as big fish goes, if its around rocks use mono
if its over sand dont crank the drag so hard.

A guy on aquidneck island has made them for 20 years. Dont have a cam for a pic. I guess chipwood(member here) helps him make them. It worked for me and im still very green with needles.
