MSBA tourneys?

Question - What would be concidered a respectable fish to weight in for the monthly and year long tourneys? I just checked the website out of curiosity and the biggest fish for last month was 31# and the month before only 25#'s.

I thought there would be more people weighting in fish, I don't get it?

No shore fish, at all?

I'm guessing but I'll bet alot of the big fish are caught during the mackerel run and that was pretty short lived this year. But yeah, that seems pretty slim.

I would have thought a few good ones would be getting picked up.

For the longest time the biggest cod was only 9# ,
on close to the last day, the leading fish was weighed in at just over 20#

Thank you all--

Couple more questions-

Does anyone know what the leading fish is for this month? There are only a few days left and I'd like to start getting involved in this.

On another note, does anyone know of any other tourneys that are being held in the next month or so?

Thanks in advance!

You should call me S-Journey....you know Fishchick is the Derby Chair! However, I can't give out information on the current leading fish of the month until the month is closed....just gotta make an educated decision and send in the slip.....for the month if it ain't 25 pounds or more let it go (unless you are gonna eat it anyway) for the year, figure if it ain't over 30 pounds don't worry about weighing it in. Rule of thumb, just go by the leader in your category....if you think you got a fish worth weighing in, then send in the slip! Have fun with it.

Almost time to get our fish on!!!

I would have called you but you were out of town when I started thinking about this.

Had a few fish around 40#'s the past couple of days but I was fishing commercial. I would like to make an open declaration on this site that I will no longer be fishing commercial and will have a cow to weigh in and win this months(years?) tourney on Sat or Sun:-)

Hope you had a good time in FLA, lets go fishin BF!

I would like someone to give me an explanation why a fish caught commercial can't be weighed in for the msba tourney !
I was told that it's in the derby rules, but my question is WHY ?
Do I have some kind of advantage over guys fishing rec ?
I'm using the same gear I would be using when fishing rec.
Do the bigger fish know to stay away from the lines of guys fishing rec. and to go to my "commercial line"
Am I using magic bait or jigs that give me an advantage !!!

Hi Ron,
I think the intent of the rule was that Comm. fishers are allowed a greater daily take, thus giving them an unfair advantage over a Rec. fisher allowed only two fish.
Keep in mind, Just my own interpretation of why.

Hope to see you guys out there this weekend, as always with work responsibilities, all plans are at last minute made.

S-Journey....when you posted this I was home....you could have called me?

Raider Ron....as I said....call the Derby Chair with any questions! However, since you ask I will make it plain and simple......Not everyone has a commercial fishing license, but everyone has the right to fish recreationally!!! I wish I could yank 30 stripers a day up onto the beach for every day of the commercial fishing season and pick and choose from all of those fish which ones I would like to weigh in for the MSBA Derby! I on the other hand am only allowed two fish per day so you can see the huge imbalance in the scales of equality there!

No need for the "magic bait" Ron, but realistically, if you can't see the logic that I have laid out here then my further explaining it to you or others will do no good! So here is the short version.....them are the rules....I don't make them, I just obey em'....and they been in place for over 50 years!

Almost time to get our fish on!!!

Larry,
I understand youre point, but who's to say you can't catch 30 fish a day as long as you are releasing 28 of them,
besides,
the averave commercial fish is about 18 lbs,
not exactly going to win any derby with a 18 lb fish

Come on Ron...let that pot simmer for a little while and think about it......you know those thirty fish are sitting in that box and you can simply pick out your prize and weigh it in.....I on the other hand have to make a decision immediately as to whether I want to keep that fish, if it is large enough to even make a difference....or throw it back to live another day? If I do catch 30 fish in a day, which I just about did a couple weeks ago....I still had to decide which fish I was gonna keep as I went along....I am not allowed to lay all 25-30 fish that I catch on the beach and then pick the two I want and then simply toss the others back into the water......we all have to play by the same exact rules.....that is two fish per day.....a level playing field is in place for everyone to compete and have fun......are you having fun yet?

By the way when you are commercial fishing, do you mean to say that you actually think about whether or not you are going to keep a fish over 34 inches or release it in hopes of catching one that could be larger or do you simply throw all of the fish over 34 inches into the box???? Trust me Ron....I believe all commercials are simply gonna measure those fish.....34 inches....into the box! Tell me I am wrong.

Larry,
If you know what the prize is (31.5 lbs as of now ) whats there to think about?
If you want to put yourself in the lead, you just keep releasing them till you catch a 32 lber!!!

Stupid me, got busy with work and I didn't realize there was a time limit to getting an official weigh in slip registered, so my 39 lber isn't entered. Personally I don't get that, if it's an "official" state certified weigh in slip, does it become something less the 39 lbs after 7 days? I guess I should have read the fine print.

I can understand the commercial rule and think that is more than fair and needed, but the 7 day rule does kind of stink:-(

Got stripers, there was a few 50#+ fish pulled out of those ledges the other day, just go get a bigger one:-)

I heard that the tuna are pushing some fish in, but the N/NE wind is going to be much easier on my old bones in a different port. I'm planning on a night maybe this week though, might even drag a few snakes around for yukes.

Weighed a good fish in on Sat, think it might be the biggest so far this year. The weight slip is getting mailed out later today

To box or not to box the fish

I fish with a commercial guy as his mate sometimes and I can tell all that if its 34" or greater its in the BOX and rightly so. I can understand Ron's question though. But Bigfishes answer was right to the point and the right one to boot. Yesterday we filled up the box and I was going to flyfish over the top of the boat captain/commercial guy when he reeled up one close because we all know that fish on the hook get chased by other fish. I never got the chance, because after we maxed the box we were both to tired to fish further so the flyrod stayed caged. Got some great fish yesterday though. Bigfish any comments on that type of fishing activity, flyfishing over the top of a guy tight with a fish on and being reeled in??? I have tried that with some success elsewhere, such as from shore, fishing next to guys plugging. But generally when your out in the bay this time of year the fish are deep and its difficult putting a fly down to them, so casting over someone with a fish on is a unique way to go after them.

Seven weeks to the fishing heaven, the Vineyard!

RR - do you understand why on the rules now? In order for me to level the playing field with you and your ability to throw up to 30 fish into the cooler, I would need to at least be luckier and hit a fish on the get go (say 40 something pounds) or do something like high grading where I would keep a fish alive until getting a bigger one and releasing that. So, having a commercial license significantly increases your odds in this tournament.

GS - the time limit has been debated in the club before and I think the reasoning is to keep the standings timely and the tourney more efficient...

Hmmm - a fish off, eh?
