My New Reel
I call it the BG7000HSNCL
it's a cross between the new BG700HSN & a original Big game reel.
I took the gears out of the HSN and trashed them replaced them with original Big game gears also upgraded the drag to smoothies, ceramic bearings and the original bronze big game housing. weight it 20 oz
If any body is interested I got in extra original BG gears.
also all the new version Gold reels sold thru us except for the 7001 will have the new problem stainless pinion gear removed and the older problem free pinion gear in it's place.

Mike, how bad is the pinion gear problem? Is it worth just swapping parts as a preventative measure?

IMO
I would change the gears. I don't trust them.
I talked with Abu last Sepetember about the problem and they said that was only in the first run of reels. the gear in question is a 2pc stainless gear and where they press the gear it would eirher slip or sieze to the spool shaft.(original Black BG is a pressed brass with stainless)
Then we had a group of reels come back (6) in june and another shop had the same problem (4). when talking with Abu they seemed concerned but when customers called in they said there was no problem and the customers would have to send their reels back if needed.
I did not like the answers I was getting and decided to take matters into my own hands.
I never had a problem with the original gears and deciided that if I was going to sell the reels I wanted to make sure my customers were not going to have a problem.
I have not seen any problems if the persons were using mono just braid.
but why should you limit your reel to just mono if it's a simple fix.

I was one of the people who called and got the brush off from Abu about it.
Even gave the head of customer care hell and he still told me to send it in and they'll "look at it".
Screw em. Mike saves the day.

Mike, is there a contact at Pure Fishing we can e-mail or call to vent about the Abu Garcia product line?
Thanks.

Yeah , imagine they come out with a whole new line and everyone is now trying to make the new ones into old Big Games!! Glad I bought a spare BG7000CL. I should be set for at least 5 more years with the one i use now and my spare. I also bought a spare 6500CL for the beaches , etc.

Was in M&D's and Mike mentioned this thread, I can confirm the gear problems on the 7001's. Picked one up this spring thinking the problems were amongst locals who could fish hard and with me making it down to the Cape maybe 8 weekends a year Id be all right. Boy was I wrong. Gear lasted maybe 8 hours at most. LIve and learn I guess.
There will be a 7001i in the line, luckily for me Abu is swapping reels since mine is mint and fully under warranty. The hell with the price differential as long as I can trust the reel.

Just reread the the entire thread, linked my response to the wrong one after trying a search.......my bad Bob. There was a problem with the gear on the 7001's from what Mike told me. And which somewhere on this site he posted about it.
