Help is south county PLEASE.

I was hoping i could get a little help with catching stripers in south county. Ive been hitting the rocks around hazard ave a couple times a week for the past 3 weeks or so. I am always killing the blues. However, i havent had a bass yet. Before dark i throw poppers, pencils, crippled herrings, kastmasters and storm shads, lottsa blues on all of em. After dark i switch over to a black mombo with a red gill, all that does is catch two blues at a time. I also have been throwing a olive needle that hasnt gotten a tap yet. As a matter of fact ive been throwing it all year and havent got a fish on it yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated, losing spikes on my korkers just for 5-8 pound blues is getting on my nerves.

Try eels

Go late night and trhow eels. I have been out in gansett a lot lately, tons of blues , but there are also a bunch a nice bass with them, got fish up to the low 20's the last couple nights. Castmasters work at night too.

There is a lot more to So. County than the Narr. rocks. Move around until you find bass. Pt. Jude, Scarb. Beach, Jamestown, Newport, Matunuck, Ctown Breachway, Watch Hill, Weekapag, Quonny....there are many more locations.

Blues are predominant this time of year but the bass are still around. If you keep doing the same thing and keep catching the same fish, you're doing something wrong. The answer is simple. Change.

Its been my experience that you'll catch more bloos durring daylight.. when it gets dark the bass come out to play ALso slow down your retrieves. blues like a fast retrieve while bass like it slow.... if your retrieving too fast there might be bass there and just dont want your offering. I wouldnt use eels though if you know bloos are around... CHOMP!

What RIJIMMY says is true: If the rocks in Narra ain't doing it for you then move. Fish a beach or a point or a jetty. You'll find your spot where the methods your're using will work---and you won't forget it. Good luck.

I would pick up the Fishing Rhode Island book put out by On the Water magazine. There's a alot of good spots in there.

I'm not trying to be derogatory , I'm trying to save your life.

If you have to ask such an elementary question , you don't belong anywhere near newton or hazard ave in narragansett.

I'm not discouraging the question , its a good question and you received some answeres. However , those areas claim the lives of fisherman every year. If your not fairly expert at this , fish elsewhere. At least go just a little further up the road to black point. Its roughly the same area. Black Point area is also dangerous but not so bad as the areas you mentioned.

Saltheart i appreciate your concern but im not exactly a rookie, i just was looking for a tip down there. Ive been fishing since i was 4, im 27 now and been surf fishing since i was 16. I always wear my korkers when needed and i really didnt think it was that elementary of a question. I know that its a deadly sopt, i choose my rocks carefully and always pick a landing sopt before i even make a cast, and dont turn my back on the water. Its just a new place for me and driving there gets expensive after a bit, i just wanna a striper. I got the surf fishing rhodie book from OTW and its been a bit helpful, im gunna try and scratch off a new location every trip i go now. Thanks for all the quick replies, im gunna pick up a bucket of slimeys and try some totally different spots this weekend, im confident i can break my streak of toothy critters.

You'll find them Rob. Looks like a good run of SW wind over the next few days, usually pushes the bait near the shore. Try some south facing beaches, at night, with eels.

what mikey and eben said... fish slow and with eels or rigged eels!!! Work through the blues. Might want to consider staying in one spot where youve been fishing and learning it well.
