Fantasy Time: You have 100K for your next boat
I don't know about you guys, but I spend a lot of time looking at boats. I love to cruise the marinas and boatyards to see what's tied up and what being worked on. And Boats.Com is at the top of my favorites list...
So, if you had an extra 100K laying around and you didn't have to fund the kids college, build an addition to your home, or sock it away for retirement, what would you have tied up to the dock? Would it be a nice new 29' SeaVee with a pair of Yammies, or maybe a 26' Regulator? How about a slightly used Carolina Classic, or a Silverhawk, maybe a new SeaCraft?
I think I would stay with the tried and true, a downeast hull, probably a H&H, or a Duffy with a single diesel. I know it wouldn't be very fancy for the budget of 100K, but it would be dry, and have a heater and a place or two to sit down. Above all, it would be economical to run. It's what I have fished on most of my life and dollar for dollar I think I would get the most boat for the money...
How 'bout it?
-Hooper

Hooper,
Like you I always look at boats. But it sickens me the prices of new boats. 100K will practically get you noting new above 26Ft new. Brokers of used boats are also crasy with there prices. Often seeing boats with book values of 12K selling for 26K.
I Love the Fortier 26 but try and find a used one with diesel less than 15 yrs old for under 70K. I am sure the new ones are 120K or so?
This is why I am still pondering of building another boat.
Jon

I would buy a slightly used 26 or 28' Vector center console boat motor and trailer and put the rest toward fishing gear and additional electronics and gas. Now if you had said 200k I would have said a used blackfin or Bertram that needed new power and some TLC Of course this is only if I had that kind of money laying around collecting dust, otherwise I will repower my current boat until death due us part

You could multiply that by ten and it still wouldn't be enough to buy my dream boat! As the other have said, 100k doesn't buy much these days.

63 Jim Smith for offshore/canyons (plus down south in the cold weather months)
then a 23 sea craft for inshore work
and a 17ft whaler for shallow water/nights
Right now I've got a 13ft whaler, and have access to a 29 Blackfin.... but I can dream cant I

100k would be a downpayment on my fantasy boat. I've always wanted a decked out 50' Wesmac, but would settle for a 46' Jarvis Newman or 45' Youngs Brothers. Boat would be rigged to the gills for tuna - sharking ect. Would need to get a 1000hp MAN LE403 to push the baby along too. I'd be looking at 500k easily.
Here a pic of the baby, hmmm someday?

I used to dream about that boat when I was a kid....

Fantasy boat? That's simple. It was a 20 to 22 foot inboard/outboard Lyman this guy named Sam Gale used to run charters out of Bass River on in the late 60's-70's. I loved that boat. Easily worth $100K to me.

I wouldn't buy a boat I would just charter the best boats and captains every weekend during the season for the rest of my life. You could probably do that off the interest of a good 100 grand investment and none of the headaches of boat ownership. Paul

Polar 27 ft CC, Would not change our new boat for the world, we are very impressed with it. If you want a heavy, nice riding center consol, very dry, with twin 225's yamaha's 4 strokes and a fishing machine, you can't go wrong. Got boat, motors and trailer, with all the goodies for under $100,000. Also has a full size head, Life is good!!!!!!!!!!

Jarvis Newman 32, cat diesel w/ dry stack through the house and keel coolers.
Never have to come out of the water that way, and you run fresh instead of salt through the engine.
or a used late 90's N/M 50 (hmmm ex-Snow Leopard) w/ full B&G and 3DL set up for offshore. footballs? hello Azores.

30+' gaff-rigged schooner, wooden hull, all the nav goodies, watermaker, tender, cannon, large poo tank. The best of both worlds -- sailing AND fishing. One day, one day.

The worst day fishing is better than the best day working. ...Wait a minute, my work IS fishing. Sweet.
