Dust Collection

I have a Grizzly mini wood lathe and it throws mucho dust.
What is the best way to control it?

I have been using a shop vac after the fact but want to put together something to keep it out of the air. I have visions of the furnace kicking off and me blowing up, Or, of my lungs caked with tokic wood dust, Or, of my wife kicking my butt as I send dust all throughout the house.

I have set up shop for a while in my basement. Soon will be in the folks barn but the dust problem will move with me...

I figure some hose and pvc to connect with the shop vac should do it. (plus filter bag in the vac). But I need some kind of baffle to put near the lathe.

Its REAL important.You dont want cedar dust in your lungs at ANY cost. Ive seen what it can do to people.

These pick up the small stuff. I still have to sweep up the large sized sawdust. I also wear a respirator while working and turn off the heat/air to the house so dust does not get sucked in the heating system too.

salty- either or both.
I am thinking of making a dust sucker from some stove hood pipe sections. and mounting it right in the front of the lathe. that should get most of it.

Better Homes and Gardens Wood magazine has plans to build a cyclone. I built it, and it works much better than any of the single stage dust collectors on the market. I also vent it out side, so there is no filter bag to worry about, which only reduces the CFM anyway. It also doubles as the suction for a spray booth. I may still have the plans around if anyone is interested. If you do decide to get one of the single stage collectors, don't be fooled by high CFM claims. They are based on calculations, not real measurements.

MTL.if your going to end up in your folks barn,i would mount the lathe on a sears moving table bench,$99 and wheel it outside when turning. Nice ,you can use your airbrush compreesor to blow everything off and the east side of the barn is warm enough to turn on most winter days. Still need a good mask though.

I remember one night johnny Carson had this wacko (Not BM)that collected dryer lint.She made all kinds of weird stuff like paper mache' with it.

I use the 30 micron dust collector myself. It is a life saver. You can purchase them from lowes too. They have the Delta version. I got one on clearence not long ago.

yes , salty is correct, its the 3-10 micron stuff that is dangerous as all heck cause it gets in so deep in your lungs that it may never get cleaned back out..It must be true "cause i read it somewhere".

OK, back to this subject.

So if you had to choose one before the other, would it be the air filtration system, to grab the <30 particles, or a one Maybe two) stage dust collector that I would tie around shop tools with wyes?

Would like both but..... in time. Thanks for yer input. Looking to hear more from Scott, Bruce, Mike D, PNG, BM, and Habs as you all share the problem, AND all have definite opinions. Pics of how you hook up to ols to system appreciated.

Nightfighter, the goal in dust collection is to get the dust before it gets in the air. Get the two stage dust collector with a really good filter (bag) or vent straight out the side of the house, like the clothes dryer.

The air filter system only gets the dust after its airborn, which means you are breathing it. Air filters do help get the dust before it settles on everything in your shop.

any of these collectors with the cannister type filtering that filters down to 2 microns will keep the air clean.

I have the one slipknot mentions. Damn good machine. I put a mini-cyclone in front of it and I get all the big chips in the can and not in the bag. It's an awesome machine for all my machines, I am buying the lathe attachment for it for sanding on the spin
