heading to BI tonight for a couple days. anyone else heading out there? anyone heard any positive reports? i am still hearing slow out there, but i'm banking on the weather change helping.

Toby, your gonna have to cover alot of water and find them, this time of year when you find them they are usually stacked...Bait is key, look for bait in the wash...If you cant get out to southeast light then Mansion Beach and Grove Point have had the most bait in previous seasons..This time of year I have seen small bait and the small white 1.5 Habs worked the best..Good Luck

Now Joe, if you go to Block Island you better be back by 4pm tomorrow when you are scheduled to be interviewed on "The Fishing Line" radio show. Maybe they can just wire you up and you can do a radio live remote from the Block surf with a waterproof microphone. That would be cool. You could end up being the Scott Muni of Rhode Island Surfcasting.

I've always been an "eels-first" kind of guy, but if the fish are keyed on small bait, I'd go with the 1.5 Habs.

Last couple of years I went to MV, we fished a well-known spot where the "book" says, eels on the drop. The two guys with me fished plugs and small jigs exclusively. Me, being stubborn, fished eels at least an hour per night, until I got sick of watching them hit fish on every cast and picked up my plug rod, at which time I racked the eel rod and switched over to plug and had every-cast hits. They were keyed on mullet and peanut bunker. I had one bass on eels the whole week, and that was on the slack.

Darters worked, along with Habs needles, which were deadly when the bait moved over a shallow flat inside of the main channel.

Funniest part of the trip was going down at the end of the drop, and meeting the guys coming up who'd drifted eels all tide and had maybe one or two fish. We went down and fished the incoming and had fish steady for 6 hours on plugs and jigs. The locals saw us at the weigh-in every morning and were racking their brains trying to figure out how and where we were getting those fish. They thought we were deliberately being "seen" at spot A, then running off to somewhere else. Couldn't believe we were getting them all on the wrong tide

i i think the key at drifting any outflow is knowing whats dropping out of that flow... sometimes its eels going off to spawn, or coming back from where they were born, or it could be herring coming in for the herring run or herring frye dumping out of the runs... If you can figure out what is drawing the bass there, then you will have success...

Eben, look for bits of fur stuck to the rocks at low tide. Fur means minks.

i was almost to the point of tears. i couldn't stop shaking for a good 20 minutes. VS300, 65# braid, 60# leader, 1201M, and i still couldn't stop that fish.

I'm glad you got to meet my girlfriend. We had a date last year at the same place, and almost the same day. You rendevous lasted a little bit longer than mine did.

I feel youre Pain...That happened to me earlier this season, except I had 5 in a row which I couldnt land, each one broke me off during a good fight. I landed a 31 and a 35LBER earlier in the same spot and these fish made those look like Babies. Had only one other night where I got broken off and that was two weeks ago, a few casts later I landed a 40+lber and thje one I broke off before that felt so much bigger, had it on for a while...Its moments like that which we search for, just hope that everything is in our favor the next time....Landing a big fish off the rocks is a well earned fish....

There was just no turning this fish. It was the most frustrating and yet hilarious battles I have ever seen. The fish takes the plug on top and decides to go south via the express lane.

That stinks.what would have done different.My Initial reaction is with the proper gear that U used cept for perhaps a 11 ' rod is that U should be able to beat most fish perhaps she was hooked under the chin.I could be wrong an i probably am.Now u have that experience under ur belt kinda like fishin college u gotta pay sometime.I am confident in the fact that u'll get her next time.

sux man I feel your pain, somewhere around that island there is a fish that took a 23 inch shad like it was a cheese nip. You got to fight yours thats cool. All I saw was headshakes from what looked like a boston whaler with stripes then zinnngggggggggggg sinnnnggggggggg zinnnngggggg pop * Followed by the longest echo of explatives ever uttered, then dead silence for half an hour

That fish totally owned me

That sux Toby, I have been there too but thats what keeps us going back for more ya know. I had 2 fish like that 4 years ago out @ Naps on consecutive casts with eels, couldnt even budge 'em. I think they felt the hook and just kept going off towards Fishers lol. When they get their head down and go deep your in for a tussle. You'll get em next time bro

Toby i wonder..... if you could hook that fish tomorrow, would you feel more confident if you were using mono?? I believe that with bigger fish, mono gives you the edge. Your less prone to hooks ripping out, hooks bending, and its a smoother fight.

the only thing that would have made me more confident would be if i was throwing my 1213M conventional. i will be loaded for bear when i go back next week. she beat me once, round two will be mine!

When does block hold good fish till? Is it a night time bite there, or good during the day? Been thinking about a day trip out there. WHat does the ferry cosy? If i dont make it this year, im definetly gonna go at least once , if not a few next year. I wanna hit Cutty up too , big time.
