I need opinions...PLEASE
..I have had this discussion with some other "SPORTS" fans many times so I'm gonna put it to you...
...IS FISHING A SPORT ??? ...
..It always led to ...is Golf a sport, what about skiing ? What makes a Sport, a Sport ??...I'm not sure I have the answer to that one but, I CONSIDER FISHING A SPORT!!.. there is strategy, technique, theres a playbook ( fish log ), we don't get rained out!,theres equipment, its a lot more physical than some so called " Sports " and their are two teams ( opponents ) us, and the fish!..and I could go on....but in all seriousness, do you fellas consider this a Sport ? and why ?...

Bloocrab,
It IS a sport, in every sense of the definition:
sport (spôrt, sprt)
Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
A particular form of this activity.
An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.
An active pastime; recreation.
For many of us it is also defined as:
Compulsive preoccupation with a fixed idea or an unwanted feeling or emotion, often accompanied by symptoms of anxiety.
A compulsive, often unreasonable idea or emotion.
AKA: OBSESSION
Here's an example of roughing the passer:

I would think that for most of us, it can be defined as sport. Some people that know us will call it other things ... Maybe to the guy that drifts worms twice a year, it's probably just recreation or a sanity check.
To me, it really is more than just sport though. It's adrenaline, sweat, salt, & scales all mixed in with beauty, serenity, and the undescribable way that the sound of the surf can melt away about everything that may have bothered me that day or week... Just not describable by my meager capabilities....

Yes i do think its a sport it may not have as much of the physical activity as others and you don't need to be in the best of shape but you must have experince and the general know how.

Probably depends upon the level upon which each of us participates. Some folks grab a 12-pack, some fritos, frozen mackerel and their favorite lawn chair... I wouldn't call that much of a sport. If it is, then pie eating contests should be considered a sport.
Some wear wetsuits, grab their rod with their teeth and swim out into the surf... or walk 6 miles on soft sand in nasty conditions in the middle of the night... or brave the weather and seas out on their boat.
Hunters and fishermen are called "sportsman." And I fish for "sport" not for meat. If you fish tournaments, you compete, sometimes on a team. Casting (well) takes timing and coordination similar to hitting a baseball or a golf ball.
I think fishing is an activity and a hobby that you can participate in at an infinite number of levels and at some of those levels, I would consider it a sport.
When I have that argument with someone, they invariably have little to no experience with fishing and almost always like golf. If they call golf a sport, fishing (at least my brand of fishing) is definitely a sport.

well what makes a sport a sport. is it being paid to do something.so people can watch it on tv.just because baseball-football-hockey-basketball-socker-golf are all on tv. does that make them the only sports i dont think so a sport is somthing that gives you a changle. like fishing. yes anyone can grab a rod and worms and go to the water and sit there and wait for a bite. but a sesious sports fisherman. will scout out an area. look for feeding birds. he will read the water.spend manny hours trying to find the right method to cath a fish. only to release him back into the waters .so another angler can test his skills to catch him.a fisherman not only learns from other fisherman . he also learns from the fish them selfs.for its the fish thats been around forever.there the ones that makes fishing a sport.they make us use all our skills and strenth to find themand catch them.sometimes we may have to walk2 miles or walk threw water up to our arm pits or row a boat for hours some people may say thats not fun. well thats why we call it a sport
