Thumbs up

From a scientific/informational standpoint, Nick Karas wrote Striped Bass which is pretty good.

Love him or hate him, Daignault's books are a should read & there are enough copies going around that you could probably borrow one from somebody. I won't get into any of the contraversy on his writings or tell you where to read between the lines or not.

Surf Fishing the Atlantic coast? Skip it... Not terrible relevant up here and not interesting in my mind...

Interesting book - Blues, by John Hersey (sp?) - More poetry than any fishing nuts & bolts but I nice read. Great to read on spring mornings on the deck with a cup of coffee...

I know of an excellent one in the works but the cat must remain in the bag

Hey MikeP!!! I think I know of a copy of that older one from the Vineyard that you were asking about... What was the name? I just want to confirm it's the right book...

"Secrets Of Surf Fishing at Night" by Doc Muller is a must.

The chapters on eels alone are worth the price alone and there's a lot of other stuff covered that's worth reading again even if you already know it.

Daignault, definitely - love him or hate him - (I happen to like the guy, even in spite of recent...uh...stuff) is also a must read, particularly "Striper Surf".

There's also a lot of stuff out of print, older books, that are worth a read, too, but often hard to find - check out the booksellers at the next sportsmen's show you go to. Jerry Sylvester's "Saltwater Fishing is Easy" comes to mind right away, written by a Rhode Islander about RI in the 50's - in some ways, not much has changed and it might make ya think a little.

"There is no royal road to this heavy surf-fishing. With all the appliances for comfort experience can suggest, there is a certain amount of hard work to be done and exposure to be bourne as a part of the price of success." From "Striped Bass," Scribner's Magazine, 1881.

John,
You're talking about "Reading The Water" by Bob Post. It's an awesome book about the good old days fishing on the Vineyard. If anyone has fished there it's a must read because you can relate to a lot of the spots that they talk about. Again, the only problem is that it is out of print and hard to find. It's probably the best book I've read about fishing.
