Question Inshore cod anyone?

Anybody out there targeting inshore cod. In the early 70's we use to get some nice cod right off White Horse Beach in Plymouth and off the rocks near Manomet Beach.

I know that there has been a big comeback with cod off the banks but has anyone had any luck within 1/4 mile of shore?

In the 60's you could plug, jig and clam belly your way to cod off the southern RI beaches. Cod on plugs off Charlestown -- boy would I like to see those days return.

Cod

I live in Charlestown, and I haven't heard of anyone getting a Cod from the beach in a very long long time. It sure would be nice if they did come back though.

I walk my dog on Charlestown beach in the winter and dont see any poles in Jan. Feb. or March. My pole is also dusty. We'll never know.

They are around. Last year I picked up two 27 inch fish on back to back weekends, just outside of Cohasset harbor. Never expected it because on both occassions it was dead low, 8 foot of water on a shallow bolder field about 1/4 mile from shore. Both hit a 6 inch plastic jerkbait I fish early in the season for schoolies.

Got stripes,

That's what I'm hearing...at least regarding Scituate, Hull, and I suspect the Plymouth area will start to light up like it once did for inshore cod. I'm afraid we still have too much dragger activity in RI right now to expect a shoreline recover of cod.

Sounds like I might be making a road trip this spring. Got stripes, did you catch those fish in May?

I can't recall the exact date, but since I was working a thinner and smaller profile for schoolies, I'd say late April maybe but more likely May. I should get you out some day, fishing & camera gear and all, the water I fish is perfect for filming especially in early spring. I could tell if I dropped a dime or a quarter overboard in 15 feet of water on some locations.

Got stripes,

Got cameras, will travel! Sounds like a plan. Late April, early May the dates you're thinking would work?

Nice photo of Gary with that Cod!

We were still getting small keeper cod off Duxbury beach in June of last season. I'm sure they are there now. Last fall, a young angler took a real nice cod right from the beach at Rexham in Marshfield.

My father, now 85, tells me of times when he and others would drift the incoming tide in Duxbury bay from bug light down the Duxbury channel and catch lots of big cod. If we get another good day soon, I'm going to take a run out and drift the incoming tide and see what happends. I'm willing to bet there are fish there for the taking. Stay tuned...

Duxbury, eh? Between the flounder and the cod, may have to give it a shot soon if the weather is warm enough.....

The inshore cod fishery is in good shape. Last year there were quite a few caught from shore by guys striper fishing. Just heading out any where from Plymouth north will put you into cod quickly. Getting a ten fish limit is not that hard.
