Hydra-Sports 212CC or Scout 202SF - Striper Talk Striped Bass Fishing, Surfcasting, Boating

Ok let me try to get this forum started with a topic, I may have my Pro-Sports sold this weekend for good $$$. I am thinking of moving up to a slightly larger boat. I've narrowed down the search to basically two possibilities. Both 2002 models with T-Tops and all the goodies. A Hydra-Sport 212CC with a 150 Yamaha HPDI, or a Scout 202SF CC with a Suzuki 140-4 stroke. Both are priced about the same with the Hydra-Sports a few dollars cheaper.

Anybody have any opinions?

I've heard only good things about both, although no first-hand experience.

The only other thing to consider is local service. If memory serves me, you fish out of Ninigret - - I'm not sure if Ocean House services Suzuki.

I agree with Oliver on the boats, I've only heard good things but a couple things to check - the HS Seahorse series may not have bronze through hulls and some important items where quality counts where you can find these in the expensive Vector line. The Scout does have these I believe. I think Oceanhouse has a good rep, I know a guy that that just got a full tilt 23 Vector CC and he has a lot of good things to say about the place and they were nice & competent when I was in there looking at the 230CC or the 21Dual Console...

BOATS over by the Honey Dew has the Suzis but you already know that

Who carries Scout / Suzuki?

BTW - I was impressed by the 21' Seaswirl Center Console at the boat show - might be worth a look too

You may want to spec. the actual cockpit space of the HS. From what I remember it was cramped for a 21

I don't think you'd go wrong with either choice. Although the Scout may not have as much freeboard as the Hydra-Sports.

That Hydra Sports with the full transom in the 23' size is quite a boat.

Personally I have had good luck with Yamaha and that would weigh in my own decision. I think they are quieter too. I could be wrong but if the Yamaha is quieter and you are making a long run it could make the trip more pleasurable. Of course the quietest are the 4 stroke hondas by far. Also, it never hurts to peak in the corners and unfinished areas to get a feel for the quality of a boats construction. I used to work on Catalina sailboats and have found more hardware rolling around in the bildges than was used in the construction of the boats. Best salesman is a current owner keep asking around. I saw your posts over at The Hull Truth too, but I'll respond over here. I didn't think either of the prices you were quoting sounded very good, they seemed about 10% high.

The Scout 202 is a nice boat, but it is an aging design and will probably be redesigned soon by Scout. Most Scouts come rigged with Yamaha, and although the new Suzuki 140 4 stroke is a very nice engine, it's not quite enough get up and go for the Scout.

The Hydra-Sports 212 is a good boat and very popular around here. In case you didn't know, this hull has been around in different forms for many years. First as the Sunbird Neptune 20, then as the Hydra-Sports Sea Horse 212 and now as just the H-S 212. It's all composite now, no wood in the hull. It's a good value and probably the better choice of these two. You should also check out the new for '02 Bombardier Fish Hawk 210. This is the exact same boat as the H-S 212 only with Evinrude power. Lakeview Marine in Coventry is a dealer.

If you can spend up to $32K you can get the new Sea Pro 220 with a T-top, Yamaha 200 OX66 and trailer. For $28K you can get a Triton 2200 with a T-top, Yamaha 150 HPDI and trailer.

And don't even get me started on the used market! Plenty of good deals out there.

Sorry Jeff, but have you ever heard a fuel injected 4 stroke run? Much quieter than a carburated 4 stroke Honda, I have one a 9.9 Honda. The Suzuki idling, ya can't even tell it is running if it wasn't for the telltale.

But I like the Yamaha reputation also. A friend of mine has twin 200 HPDI's and they are quiet too, and smooth.

No Slip I haven't been on a boat powered by a fuel injected 4 stroke but I am sure it is quieter. Maybe someday. One thing I know for sure they all beat my first boats 40 merc. now that was one loud outboard.

Look at the back of the April on the water - good prices on the 212CC, probalby stripped but give you an idea...

GF - check out the starting price of the 220CC at edsmarinesuperstore.com - I might say the hell with an old seacraft and get that puppy

Hey guys,
Thanks for all your input. It's a tough decision for sure right now. I think I need to take a second look at both boats. I remember the HS felt roomier, but the quality in the Scout felt and looked superior in everything from hardware to fit and finish. I don't think it would be a speed demon with the 140 Suzuki, but I know the fuel economy would be great. The 4-strokes purr like a kitten. The comment about a complete Scout 202 redesign for 2003 has me a bit uneasy, does anyone know this to be fact?

Well after several weeks of shopping for a boat I bought a Scout 202 Sportfisher yesterday. The quality, construction, and layout of these boats are top notch. Should have this baby in the water in 2-weeks
