Early Blues @ South Cape

Question for the board:

I've tried to catch the annual bluefish blitz at South Cape Beach the last couple of years, but I've always missed it by a day or two it seems. Can anyone give me any tips on timing it a little bit better? Does it always start around the same time on the calendar? Is dawn or dusk generally better? Is their arrival there primarily based on water temps? If so, what temps are the key?

From what I gather they always seem to hit around the first week of May, but I always seem to just miss. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Just because they're not showing doesn't mean that they're not there....


....I hit the Cotuit bay area last year about the 2nd week of May...and there was nothing visible...

...We canoed out to the channel....and BANG!!! .....bluefish were pulling us in all directions.....one after the other.......but you'd never know it unless you was wettin a line....

....I've also tried the last couple of years to catch those Blitzes, but haven't seen em' on top yet......and guess what??.....

Hey Blitz - Sometimes you also need to have a few people casting long distances to reach them, then all of a sudden they're at your feet and swimming between your legs.

There are a couple of regulars here that hit those spots so beyond that, I'll shut up and let them talk - if they want to

watch the water temp. three days after it hits 50 degrees you want to fish in coming evening tide use roberts orange or red and white if it is not happening wait three more and go . or get in touch with fisherwoman or me baitcaster

if any one can tell you when the blues are in its baitcaster him an fisher woman. ive fished with him for years and let me tell you he could be sound asleep . and wake up and say ok lets go the blues are in.lol. no billy knows his blues down there many times weve got there seen nothin and just start casting and bring them in .then it also helps when baitcaster throws 50 yards further then you so he can drive them in. that way my arms dont hurt so quick lol lol

Looks like I've basically had the information correct, I've just been unlucky. I've been heading down the last few years just after water hits 50, usually around May 6th or so. Always seem to be a few days early or a few days late, but maybe I'll get'em this year.

I'll take the incoming tide in the evenings advice, though. I've usually tried at first light...perhaps evenings are the answer.


A few weekends trout fishing and it will be the first week of May before we know it!

Hey Blitzseeker, it's much more productive in the evening, incoming tide, strong south west wind, and you will be golden. Keep an eye on the tides for that area. Also try hiting it a couple of nights in a row if you can.

If you have never waded these area's before, please be carefull and look at it at low tide 1st. Somebody drowns there every year. There can be some really strong currents out there at times.

well, i am golden; and i've been hitting them every year for the past 15 or so. honestly, they can be at cotuit and not south cape. i'll tell you this, even on cold years i've gotten them by the end of the first week of may, this year with the warm weather they might be a few days earlier; but if you want to get a blitz of fish you can't beat the second or third week this year. wade out at oregon, walk to the jetty at Waqoiut( when the tide comes up, the fish push the squid into the wall and you can hammer them). Finally, i mentioned the most important thing - when you see the squid boats out there in the sound, then you know you're in for a workout.

one other thing(i should shut up now)...yes, SW(usually, but not always), 2hrs before thru aftyer high, and one other place towards the golf course(no parking, but if you can, you'll see). you can also slam them at hardings, go right, wade out on bar, hold on.
