Polarized Sunglasses
Can anyone recommend a good pair of moderately priced polarized sunglasses ($50 - $100)? I hate to spend a lot of money on sunglasses as I have a bad habit of wrecking / losing them, but I don't want to get junk either. Any advice appreciated.

I get mine at Walmart (shhhh, dont tell anyone- lol) . they have them for something like 7 - 15 bucks. They probably don't look as good as a 100 dollar pair, but they work. BTW - I kill sunglasses constantly... I would be SO pissed at myself for sitting on 100 dollar sunglasses, I'd kick my own ass.

Watever you get make sure that they are 1) polarized and 2) block 100% of the UV rays.

You can check thes glasses to see if they are polarized with 2 pairs. Polarization cancells light waves in one plane. So if you hold one pair in front of the other and rotate one of the pairs 90 degrees, you should not be able to see anything through the glasses. If they say "polarized", and that trick does not work, don't buy them.
I also buy the cheap throw aways. I have ruined too many good pairs.

What are you using them for ie. offshore, inshore, flats, etc..? Buying cheap glasses is a big mistake. Most are optically distorted and might not fully block UV rays. I like glass lenses too.

Does the color of the polorized lenses make a differece? For instance, grey, amber, blue etc.?

Deal of a lifetime
You will never find this guy, but I'm driving in North Smithfield last Saturday on Rt102 and there's a guy on the side of the road with a truck and a big sign that says "Polarized Sunglasses". So I stopped because I had lost my last pair chasing my stupid dog thru the woods.
Anyway, their Forster Grants and they and they still ahve the tags and labels on them. $5 bucks a pair 5 for $20. I bought 5 pair and they are great.....

Don't know how much difference the color makes but grey is the easiest on your eyes. Amber if ya like feelin spaced out.  |

I wear glasses anyways, so I get the Wiley X brand through my eye doctor. I order the lenses in my prescription and also get them polarized. A little on the expensive side buy I figure I'm worth it. My current pair is 4 years old and should be replaced.

I liked my Natives but they break frequently - not made for being, err, rugged. Cheap repair / replacement warranty is well needed. They work great.
I REALLY miss my Costa Del Mar Hammerheads and I'm still looking for some of these super durable, large squash intended, glasses. Pretty crisp view and can beat the daylights out of them. Unfortunately the version I had is no longer made and the new Hammerheads are a little different...
The nice thing about lens color - go to Costa Del Mar's website and check out the frame colors tailored for different conditions and find what might be best for you...

I wear em all the time outside, around my neck when I take them off and I have yet to break a pair yet... and I break alot of glasses... still, full no questions lifetime warranty...

Unfortunately yes - in fact mine are going back in... Seriously, they are great glasses and Native has the best return / warranty program going, but my style glasses are very, uhh, delicate...
If they did not break so easily in MY CLUMSY HANDS they would be perfect. The interchangeable lenses are great. They just could not terlate the abuse I got out of my Costas |

lense colors
Amber lenses are good for seeing contour in the water, shallow water. If you were going to fish the flats for bonefish, permit, tarpon, etc., you'd want the amber lenses because they show up the contrast really well. The grey lenses are used a lot by the offshore guys because they block a lot of light, but not as good for situations that require contrast. But ultimately it does come down to a personal preference. Whether you buy an expensive pair or not, such as Maui Jims - I like the Ocean Waves -- you can test the two different colors. But they can be expensive. Another good option for a very good price are the fly fisherman sunglasses. i think they retail for under $30 and are pretty popular. Those Havanas with the Wave 580 are absolutely sick! Those glasses have the crispest view by far that I have ever seen... |
