When is a sub not a grinder in RI?

The answer is:



When the sub is a Russian, Juliett Class - 484, diesel powered, nuclear missile carrying submarine. This sub was commissioned in 1965 and it had a payload of 4 nuclear, cruise missiles that were targeted on the East Coast. This 300 foot sub will have a starring role in the upcoming film, "K-19: The Widowmaker," starring Harrison Ford and Liam Neeson. It was actually the K-77.

It's now at the Port of Providence.

That sub was supposed to use it's nuke cruise missiles against our navy ships but they weren't accurate enough so they would move the ships off our coast and aim for bigger targets if the ballon went up...

That big "crack" in the forward portion of the sail is actually a hinged section that unveils a big radar antenna to guide the missiles...

I had a chance in the early 90s to board a Russian cruiser and destroyer in Boston Harbor and it was distrubing to see how crude these ships are when compared to their western counterparts. It's amazing that they didn't leak but I'm sure they were still deadly (to us and them)

The Russian navy is in tough shape, the few Russian navy ships that I saw during my hitch in the USN (90-94) were in very bad repair. Listing, rusty just dirty looking vessels. Its no wonder a few of their sailors defect on each port visit.
