trying to ID a fish
What is at least 20 pounds, has another fish approx. 15 pounds near it, is very dark, breaks the surface a bit as it plays around in the shallows, and hangs out in Newport this time of year? Couldn't tell if they were spawning or not but being that there was 2 of them acting oddly that was certainly the impression I got.
All offerings were ignored. I really wish I had a snag hook.
Also its tail is much like a blackfish or tripletail.
A giant blackfish is my best guess as to what I saw tonight. Any other ideas?

Right around slack and in a lee. They were way too dark to be a bass so that must be what I saw.

No where near fresh water. I was at one of the beaches. It was too dark to be a carp, I think.

Pete, if you see crafty angler anytime soon, bring this up to him. I have taken a vow of silence about this, but he knows very well what you saw and even better, how to target them..
Goosefish told me that blackfish kiss while spawning............ cool eh?
