Terminal Tackle

Hello Everyone,

I haven't been here for awhile and am just getting caught up on what's been happening. I just have a question about terminal tackle. For leaders should I be using mono line (such as 40 lb) or shock leaders?

Thanks

kippy,
What are you using for line? If you are using mono for your main line you a piece of 40lb mono should work just fine. If you are fishing braid you want your leader to break before your main line so you don't lose too much of the high cost braid, the leader also stretches to absorb soem of the shock of casting. The way you rig it will change on if you are fishing with spinning or conventional tackle. With spinner you should tie a swivel onto your line and attach the leader to the swivel. THe leader should be short enough so you can cast without pulling the swivel through the tip. With a conventional you can tie your leader straight to the mainline and it can be as long as you want it, just be careful casting the knot can do a job on your thumb.

Fishpart,

I'm using spinning tackle with Berkley Big game line. Would I use a barrel swivel to connect the line to the leader? Also, I've seen that Stren makes high impact mono leader. Would you recommend this or high impact mono line?

Yes, use the swivel to attach the leader to the main line. There are about a million opinions on exactly what to use for a leader, I use Ande pink mono line because that is what I have. There are some who swear by flourocarbon. All in all most of the leader materials seem a little tougher than monofilament line.
