How's the price of gas affecting your season ?

I asked this same question when gas first shot-up to about $3.00 per gallon, but that was before the season started.

Just curious, how's the price of gas affecting your fishing/travel habits now ?

I'll go first. I've been more selective in where I fish and do not take as many "just to go" trips anymore.

Not at all. I drive a sub compact econo-box. Well, couldn't get a 1 piece rod, but that's about it.

I put $140 in the boat on saturday morning, burnt about a third to a half of it then put another $80 on sunday and burn't about 3/4 of it.

Worth every mother f'n penny. Great fishing, having a BBQ tonight to finish off the rest of it.

I put almost fishing 3000 miles on my truck since June and now the savings account is a little low....18 miles / gallon isny bad for a V8. I have to slow down a bit and only fish locally and hit em hard in September and October.

Time to downgrade to a smaller truck.

Nice to see some honesty, The truth is $3.00 a gallon sucks....its expensive and to just go for "goings" sake is a luxery many cant afford anymore. It definatly hurts, especially when you have a family. There is no way $4.50 a gallon by august isnt going to hurt a lot of people...unless like most of the guys here except me...your very rich....The truth is gas prices suck......

$97 to fill my truck the other day I can't be letting the tank get that low again.

Heck ya it's effecting my fishing, I have fished more at the canal so far, but also I have not gotten to the Cape as much since the plovers ruled most of the beaches the past month or so, now I will get out there more only to now have to deal with mung and seals if I can find bass.

Cut down on my trips dramatically. Especially with minimal fish in the canal. With the dodge it was 24 bux down and back. The GMC has it down to around 16 so not as bad. Last year I was averaging 3 trips down there a week. Now down to 1 maybe.

Mac, what size engine is in the new Mac mobile, 5.3, 5.7??

My 5.3L get 18mpg hwy...not bad for a truck with over 110K miles.

Put the bad boy on cruise at 70mph and the canal is only 1hr and 15 mins away for me......~ 100 miles

Have not made any trips to the outer cape as I am limiting my fishing mileage to 100 miles one way.

Almost 3000 miles since June @ $3.00 / gallon @ 18mpg

(3000/18)*3 = ~$500

YIKES!!!

smallest v-8 GM makes. 4.8, they claim it has 295 HP yeah right. I can get 20 on the highway if I keep my foot out of the equation. The dodge was only getting me 12 on the highway or less if I was in a hurry.

well, i do boat trips

about 20 gallons each time i fill up. had to do that 3 times this year

20*3=60*3=180

Thats on average 3 trips per week. I don't think ill ever go with a bigger boat.

Ive been putting more of it on plastic than in previous years but should be able to pay it off come winter. Oh crap, forgot bout intrest. Still fishin no matter the cost.

Everything is better on the rocks.

considering most sport fish boats get between 1 and 3 mpg I would bet it effects many. I am not going boating as much this season as I am finding other things to do at home. I have a hobicat and a new home theater with a 60" high def TV which I am getting much enjoyment out of and it costs little to run. When I go fishing, I do my normal trips but it is painful to fill up. The other week I stopped putting fuel in when I reached $300 and had a ways more to go before it was full. Most sport fishing boats cost more then a grand to top off now. Some well beyond that. 300 for a CC gets me about 3 weeks of fishing so about 100/week is about my "mean" average for most of the season, add to that 3500 for dockage and probably double that for all the other misc stuff through out the year and you get the boating fiscal picture. For longer distance trips and during the derby it will probably be about 300 per week. Yes it is painful but a good day on the water is priceless. It does not effect my surfcasting significantly.

There was an interesting article in the newspaper here about a guy who went to Menemsha, took a look at the cost of a charter boat trip (400-600) and was told he could only take 2 fish. His comment was that is a lot of money for two fish and decided to fish off the dock in Menemsha with bait he purchased at the grocery store. He got several large bass, during the day, in the harbor ...one weighed in at 47# the others were 20 and 30#. Not bad considering the charter boats are not doing that good on average. You can do it on the cheap .

When I take people out in my boat I tell them up front they will have to chip in for gas..... No more free rides. I have also requested that they pay for any of my tackle that they loss during the trip... Wait to you see the price of tackle go up remember plastic and rubber are all petrolium based.... it's only going to get worse.
