Cape Cod Canal - call it the right name!
Ok, is it just ME that gets PO'ed when some one called the Cape Cod Canal another name? I call it "The Canal" to people in the local area.
Who the heck ever came up with the name "The Ditch"?! May be I'm just perpetually grumpy. When I hear people use it in that term - I always correct them. Is it just me or do you care what people call it?
When I hear "ditch" - I think of a something that is associated w/ debris or sewage. Ya know people say: "throw that in the ditch" ,or "ditch that car".
May be I should have had my coffee earlier!

It used to be the official nickname of the state, before someone came up with "The Ocean State" in the 70s.

How about when people refer to it as "the pork chop". Is it so hard to say Block Island?

Once the "ditch" FILLS w/ water then it is called a CANAL.
Panama CANAL = any one call it the Panama DITCH?!
May be I am just being ANAL (drop the C from CANAL).
Eat your heros/hogies as well! I call it a "sub" (submarine sandwich). Hard to get a good steak sub now a days..... use to go to Carl's in Waltham (now the steak isn't shaved any more it is cubed/rectangular )
Just bored at lunchtime.

Jeeez - some one dug this up ..... LOL.
Call it whatever ya want.
" The Canal " sounds good to me. If you call it " The Ditch " then I will have to assume you live outta state.
We should rename the Panama Canal to the Panama Ditch then, right?
Man ....... itz gonna be a LOoooooong Winter, huh ?!

The Suez Canal is called "The Ditch" by mariners, the Panama Canal
referred to as "The Big Ditch" (think I'm seeing a trend). Seems the trend is that artificial gouges of earth are called ditches

When they dig it , its empty until the end. So for a long time , it is just a "Ditch". I have a friedn whose father worked digging the canal. She had pictures and its amazing how much was dug (wide , deep and long) and still no water in it.

Is it over in Sandwich where they have a display of how the CCC was made?
Those would be some cool pics, Saltheart - it is possible for you to scan them/post them online for us? I'ld love to see them. I could look at old black and white photographs and listem to people's stories forever. My wife's grandmother was born at the turn of the century in England (Italian descent) and she showed me her birth certificate and bunch of old pictures. Of course every one else just walked away from her because they had hear the story 1000 times. I'm facinated by stuff like that. Wish I had paid more attention to my grandparents where they were alive. They didn't talk much coming over here and how tough life was back then. My father's family was too poor to eat rice so they would eat yams all the time. My mother loved yams so he would tote over a big sack when he come to visit her and he would cherish his bowl of rice. My mother use to buy yams and hide them when I was a kid and I thought they needed to be in dark places ...... LOL. It turned out my father would go ballistic when he found them!! He would yell and ask her WHY would you buy those things!! That never stopped mom from eating them. Time has passed and my father eats yams now - may be it is just comfort food and it reminds him of her (she passed away back in 1996). Sorry... I regress as usual. Getting a little teary eyed thinking about it.
