Mono on Penn Squidder?

I have an older Penn Squidder 140 reel with plastic spool - someone told me that I should use a metal spool with mono, that it will break the plastic spool...Anyone? Also, what test mono is good to run on this reel? I use 18-20 braided now.
THX

I have used Penn Squidders for years with plastic spools and never had a problem with mono. I like 30# Big Game.

IF you can find an alluminum spool, go with that. you shouldn't have any trouble with the mono on the plastic (bakelite) spool, though. i hav a 145 squidder that i like to throw. i put 30# trilene big game on it, and it is SWEET! i still can't beleive how fast that reel is! the first couple of casts after changing back over from other conventionals is always a little bit messy....

THX I have also heard that the mono may be more prone to backlash..?
