R.I.Fishing Report

Last sun.8/11 I was fly fishing at Charlestown Breachway on an outgoing tide & at around 7 am. I hooked into a striper way back in the pond. Twenty min,. later I landed a 31in keeper. Nice fish. When I was fishing I noticed there was'nt much bait around. I went back fishing at around 11:00am for the incomming tide. Tons of bait fish came in & shad & BIG stripers were everywere. I got a bunch of shad but could'nt hook a striper. Everone fishing seemed to be in the same boat. I think sometimes there is just to much bait. This senario played out every day for the 4 days I was there.I'm going this weekend & I'll post another report.

Guyfish,
Same,Saturday 8/17 on the top of the tide around 6PM. stripers breaking and so much bait around.
Had the right fly a bunker pattern was a little frustrating to see so many big fish not interested.Of all the people fishing off the boat ramp I didn't see any fish hooked.Try again later in the week when the tide is on the dark side might be better.

Hello All, I'm back.

It looks like I'm not the only one having problems with too much bait in the channel. I guess I just missed the stripers on the PM tide. I fished till about 5:30 and not much happening. They were catching a few scup at the tip, but most of us were frustrated.

How does everybody deal with screamin' boats every 3 minutes?

I guess the traffic slows down towards evening ey?

All in all we had a good time and will be back to try the incoming PM tides.

Thanks for the help

Jack

Jack,
If you move back into the pond, beyond the boat ramp the boats are not as bad.
Also the week day's at night not as much traffic.Remember the tide difference is about almost two hours to fill-up in the back.Wade accordingly not to get in trouble.Hope this was some help.Good late tides this week should help with these fussy stripers I'm heading down Tuesday 8/20 hope they show.

Hey Wes, Thanks!

Let me know what happens on Tues. The next time I can get out there would be Thurs 8/22.

You are actually seeing the fish and casting to them? Or are they just schooling around?

I'm looking at the charts and your Tues tide will be at 8:24 PM. So what time will you fish the pond?

I have a 9:45 on Thurs. I will hit it accordingly.

We've been getting into them right at dusk just north of you, off the beaches and rocks. But nothing before dusk. Getting them to take something is another matter. They've been very finicky preferring very small offerings with an occasional take on big poppers, cocahoes and the like. Of course, the sure thing is, as always, mole crabs in the surf.

Jack,
Try to hit the water by dusk, and if they start to move in with the tide it will definitely be a sight to see.
Yes, they break water pretty aggressively feeding on I believe peanut bunker. Two weeks ago I took some real good fish into the backing, but that's not hard for the striper on a running tide. Bob, is right getting them to take is another matter. Good luck, & tight lines.

Jack,
Tuesday night, what a show of fish and bait on the incoming tide. You should see the same Thursday night, at dusk as the tide starts to move in. The shad were as big as the schoolies.
I took two big shad on a sinking line not many fish taken by the fly guys, but the spinning rod's were doing pretty good on (SMALL) top water plugs.
I should have changed over to a floating line at dusk, and I might have done better with the stripers.
The show was really something to see tons of bait with fish feeding everywhere, the whole area was one massive feeding frenzy.
Good luck Thursday night.

Charlestown Breachway

The current was screaming tonight(wed) with the moon tide. Lots of bait on the beach but didn't see any fish. Beautiful sunset/moonrise on a flat calm ocean.
