Is there anything alive in the Canal?

I haven't heard of any canal bass in quite some time. Gonna head down with my brother about 4am and try our luck. It seems slow as hell out there, figure canal is good a place as any.

What fish there are seem to be right on the bottom--probably feeding on crabs and lobsters.

Don't let anyone on certain other websites tell you that the herring aren't in trouble, and that there were "tons" of herring in the run this year. Very few running up, almost no dropbacks. This was the worst June I can remember in the Canal. The very few days of good fishing happened when schools of pogies passed through.

August will probably bring tons of smallish fish on 2" bait. Until then, fish nights with jigs or eels, or chunk by day. Or pray that you're there when a school of mackerel decides to come in from the east end.

Wise men speak because they have something to say; Fools, because they have to say something.
