Hi everyone I am looking for a good rod. I want to do some boat fishing. I need a good rod but it can't cost too much <img src="/Images/Wink.gif"><!--e3-->

Where you can get good rods. I live in Newton and it can't be more then 1hr from there driving time one way

Many local tackle shops will carry some of the off the rack Penn boat rods, decent rods but not as nice as custom. A good custom rod, although more money, will certainly feel and fight better. I get most of my rodbuilding gear from Mike and he has uses the best... What kind of boat rod do you want???

I want a rod that will fish well. I don't go after as big fish as you guys, and galls. I will quite content with a 26" fish. I plan on fishing live bait and doing some lure casting.

Make some phone calls, see if you can find a shop with a nice selection of St Croix boat rods. Good value for the money.

My rods wouldn't even be considered "boat" rods by most people's standards. My old standby was a Lamiglass GLB841M, of which I have a couple built for convensional tackle and a couple spinning. The conventional throw both chunks and live bait equally well and the spinning was also my standard for throwing my 7 inch plastic jerkbaits and poppers. Great rods, not too heavy, but plenty of balls if you get into some big ones. I've since fallen in love with my Lamiglass GW84ML for the plastic jerkbaits. It's even lighter (obviously being ML), but what I like is the better sensitivity over the GLB series. Blank, cork, guides and everything needed shouldn't run more than $100.

You could find a builder to quote you on the rods, or try building them yourself. I've got an article on my Fishing Page that should help on the building and I'd be more than happy to give you all the particulars on spacing etc from my own rods. If you don't want to go custom, then Bass Pro or Cabelas have some resonably priced rods. Good luck and tight lines.

Check out Monahan's marine in Weymouth on Rte 18. They carry St. Croix and Fenwick which are both good choices for higher end rods. Also, Daiwa and Penn for less $. The Sports Authority in Braintree has a fairly good selection of Penn and Daiwa as well. You might also call for the Cabelas (www.cabelas.com) catalog which has a very good selection if mail order is your thing.
